Will Lucas and Dylan’s happy ever after be able to weather the storm that is heading for Sapphire Cay? Join characters old and new as we celebrate Dylan and Lucas’s wedding and delve into the history of Sapphire Cay.
Connor and Shaun are directly related to Peter and Alfie, a couple whose clandestine lover affair was overshadowed by old prejudices and a world war. Shaun Jamieson is a writer, a romantic and needs to pen the story of the affair’s final secrets; Connor French’s family wants to stop Shaun. When the two men step onto the sands of Sapphire Cay, they find more than just the secrets of an old love. They find hope and comfort in each other. But with the past hanging over them, can they ever have what Peter and Alfie could not? Or are they just as ill-fated as their ancestors?
With feuding families, unearthed secrets, and a violent storm that threatens the Cay, will the idyllic island with her cast of characters make it through unscathed? It’s time for the circle to close on the story of Sapphire Cay, and on the men who have lived and found love on her beaches.
Forever in the Sun is the 6th and final book in RJ Scott and Meredith Russell’s Sapphire Cay series, and a more beautiful and fitting end I couldn’t have wished for.
Even though it is a novella Forever in the Sun does contain two distinctly separate stories. The first half is devoted to Lucas and Dylan’s wedding, which was one of those events where everything turned out wonderfully despite the mishaps along the way and all I can say is Mutt stole the day and I would really have liked to have seen that cake! It was funny, and sweet with a beautiful ceremony at its heart.
The other half of the story revolves itself around the mystery of Alfie and Peter, the two lovers from the thirties whose letters were found by Dylan in book 4, Christmas in the Sun. Peter and Alfie were together on the Cay in a time when two men could not be openly gay and together in normal life.
Peter was married and his legacy is a charitable foundation headed by his nephew Oscar. Conner French is Oscar’s grandson and he is sent to the Cay to retrieve the letters and put a stop to the possibility of their love story being told to the world. Oscar still thinks gay is something to be ashamed of and he is determined to keep Peter’s sexuality a secret.
Shaun Jamieson is Alfie’s great grandson. He’s a journalist and a romantic who believes Peter and Alfie’s story should be told and both men end up on the Cay at the same time. Conner and Shaun don’t get on at first, Conner is trying to do his grandfather’s wishes even though he doesn’t believe the secrecy is warranted but his heart isn’t in it and soon Sapphire Cay weaves its magical charm between the two men. Add in a hurricane that threatens, but also reveals even more in its wake, and you have a perfect end to a wonderful series.
One of my favorite characters in Forever in the Sun was Annalisa, Peter’s still living wife, who just wanted to be sure Peter had some happiness after all but I will admit I found the idea of a 95 year old woman still in full command of her facilities and memories to be stretching it a bit, but she was quite lovely.
I ended Forever in the Sun with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face, what more could any reader want. I’m looking forward to my next holiday in the sun where I can sit and devour the stories all over again, one after the other, and if you haven’t yet started your journey on the Cay that’s the best way to do it.
