In October 1941, the violence of Baltimore’s warring mob families is escalating. The danger has decimated many of the businesses around DuMochelle’s restaurant where Barry waits tables. When a mob boss and his family begin to frequent the restaurant, a romantic relationship develops between Barry and Vinnie, a bodyguard. Vinnie resists, fearing for Barry’s safety and concerned that Barry will want nothing to do with him if he discovers his role in the family. But their passion cannot be denied, and Vinnie is trapped between the love he wants and the only life he’s known. As the rival mob family moves in for the kill, Vinnie and Barry find themselves caught in the crossfire.
I’ve enjoyed just about everything I’ve read by Hank Edwards but because I’ve mainly read his mysteries or erotica I wasn’t sure how much I would like Hired Muscle. It an historical, a genre I don’t normally like. Turns out I shouldn’t have doubted Edwards’ talent.
Hired Muscle is a pleasant read about a mobster’s bodyguard and a waiter at a restaurant the Mafioso frequents. Being gay in that time period, 1941, had to have been difficult enough but having a uber-masculine and undoubtedly homophobic career like Vinnie had and it had to have been even more troublesome.
The issues Vinnie and Barry face are what you would expect for that era, namely Barry wanting more time and not to feel second place. Considering the complications of such a relationship back then I truly wondered how these two could get their happily ever after or if there was going to be one. Turns out, once again, I shouldn’t have doubted Edwards’ aptitude. He managed to craft not just a sweet ending but also a believable one.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
