Alchemists and Elementals: Book Three

Before Headmaster Oberon Bertolini stands the lover he lost seventeen years ago: Hazrael, the most powerful etherealthant to ever live. Abducted and presumed dead, Hazrael has no memory of his time with the necromancers or the atrocities he was forced to inflict on humanity while under their control. Torn between his memories of the man Hazrael used to be and the one with blood on his hands, Oberon tries to offer the support Hazrael needs to heal and regain his life.

The only evidence Hazrael has of seventeen lost years are the necromantic carvings decorating his body and the chasm between those he thought were his friends and himself. Hazrael attempts to make amends for deeds performed without his consent, but as he heals, odd powers manifest. A visit from the Hierophant, a religious seer, warns Hazrael that the marks he bears are the Kiss of Death, a way for the necromancers to track him. He knows he must sacrifice himself to save those he loves. If he can’t help defeat the necromancers and gain vengeance for their crimes, he will never find redemption or win the future he and Oberon had planned.

My View:

Kiss of Death appears to be the final installment in the Alchemist and Elemental series. In this book, the fight with the necromancers finally ends and now the world can begin to heal and rebuild. You really need to read all the books in order to fully understand this world, the characters, and the battle.

Once again Cassie Sweet defied the odds and gave me two MCs I loved, even though I hated one in the last book. Hazreal was a baddy of the highest order in the previous book. Appearing to be evil to the core, I hated him and could not think of any way he could turn into a good guy. So I was very concerned with the fact that he was the main love interest in this final book. However, as I said, the author created a character I fell in love with and completely redeemed him in my eyes. His backstory was horrific and emotional. I hurt for him as he struggled to come to grips with what he did under the necromancer’s influence. And my heart soared when he fought for the side of good and beat down the real big bad. Hazreal turned out to be a person of incredible integrity and my heart ached for what he was put through.

And I want to state again how awesome I think this world was. It was so vivid and full of life and action. I thought the author did a great job taking modern ideas and twisting them to fit in the historical setting. Like the way she created a “cell phone” like sphere for communication. It was fantastic. I really hate that this appears to be the last installment in this series, because there are so many more characters I would love to get to know more. And I would love to see the rebuilding of the society after the big bad’s influence has been eliminated.

Finally, I loved the battle plans, the battle itself, and the way the author resolved the series ARC. I did not see the ending coming, though I feel like I should have. The resolution was fitting for the series and wrapped things up nicely. All my questions were finally answered and I was left with a warm fuzzy feeling.

This series was fantastic. It was so wonderfully put together and executed that I recommend these books to any fan of historical fantasies.
