Before he can embrace his future, he must accept himself.

Kael is happy with his life. A consummate sub, he’s out, proud, and surrounded by good friends. Then he hears about Master L, a new Dom who has all the twinks aflutter. Kael’s curious, but not unduly so, until he and the stud do a scene. Then he understands the commotion. But since Master L only ever tops a sub once, when it’s over Kael is determined to forget him, even if he has to go on holiday to do it.

Liam is deep in the closet, but the Dom known as Master L also has needs. So far, he’s kept his identity a secret by never choosing the same boy twice, and frequently changing venues. After his scene with Kael, Liam finds himself fixating on the sub and willing to break his one-time only rule. But will it lead to heartache or happiness?

My View:

Out and experienced sub Kael meets Master L at their BDSM club, and the attraction is immediate. Master L is closeted and cautious, never working with the same boy more than once, but their scene together leaves them both reeling and wanting more. Master L must decide if Kael is worth the cost of accepting and sharing his identity and his life.

This lovely novella is a pleasurable escape read, with the focus of the story centering upon the scenes that Liam and Kael share together. The interplay between the two men is where Sean Michael shines, depicting how the needs of each individual are met through the beauty of the power exchange in a BDSM scene. Kael and Liam are gorgeous together, and their chemistry and desire for one another are vividly portrayed in heady, sensual detail.

I would have liked a bit more information about Liam and his work, particularly how it influences his reluctance to come out of the closet. Since this is the major conflict in the story, its development through the character’s inner and external struggles would have made it a stronger point of contention and helped to create more connection between Liam and the reader. This is where the story lost some of its impact for me, and I was a bit disappointed by the lack of opportunity to further understand a character I truly liked.

Overall, Master Takes a Name is a beautiful little BDSM nugget that puts the relationship between Dom and sub center stage and allows the reader to witness the development of trust and commitment between the players both within and outside of the scenes. I enjoyed reading Kael and Liam’s story, and I recommend it for those who love low-angst BDSM laced with a bit of sweet romance. 3.75 Stars.
