With their countries on the brink of war, Damen and his new master, Prince Laurent, must exchange the intrigues of the palace for the sweeping might of the battlefield as they travel to the border to avert a lethal plot.
Forced to hide his identity, Damen finds himself increasingly drawn to the dangerous, charismatic Laurent. But as the fledgling trust between the two men deepens, the truth of secrets from both their pasts is poised to deal them the crowning death blow…
I had first read Captive Prince a while ago and didn’t care for it as much as some. I found the plot tedious and confusing and the romance severely lacking. However I read Captive Prince Volume Two and found I enjoyed it much more.
In anticipation of the release of the third book, I decided to read the rerelease of Prince’s Gambit, formerly Captive Prince Vol 2, and found I liked it even more the second time around.
The intrigue and action in this novel is great. The setting is rich and vibrant and it is easy to lose yourself in the book.
When it comes to characters, Laurent’s mind is a devious thing and you never know how many steps ahead of everyone else he is. I appreciated seeing further into Laurent’s motivations. I loved Damen and his sense of rightness. I loved that even though he was a slave he still gave his loyalty to Laurent, as he thought it was the best thing to do for his country. I loved the banter between Laurent and Damen; the little back and forth they have.
I encourage anyone who read the first book to continue with the second. If you loved the first, you won’t be disappointed with this one, and if you didn’t love the first, you may find this more your taste.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
