Living a lie, Matthew ‘Mattie’ Alexander is exhausted. It’s not easy to keep up the pretence, the deceit, but it’s safer. Coming out to a world who so easily hate takes a courage he’s yet to find, so he pretends – pretends to be into women – pretends to love being a part of the university’s football team. It keeps him safe, hidden.

Until he meets Julian.

From the moment they first meet, Mattie knows life is about to change. He’s yet to determine if it is for the better or worse.

Living life through laughter, Julian is lonely. Without the jokes, the humour, he would be living on the edge of depression. Succumbing to his controlling father’s demands, Julian finds no joy in the path laid out before him.

Until he meets Mattie.

As soon as they cross paths, Mattie has the power to drive Julian’s man parts crazy with lust. But can lust be enough to help Mattie out of the closet, and guide Julian into a happier place?

Limits will be pushed. Rules will be broken. But it’s only together, that they will have the strength to overpower fear, fear of themselves and fear of others. Just how far are they willing to go in the aim of coming out?

My View:

Lila Rose is part of the trend of het authors dabbling in M/M Romance. As with so many such authors, her foray into the M/M Romance world involves an otherwise minor couple in a Het romance series. Coming Out ties in with her Hawks MC Club series, but stands alone fairly well.

If you are already reading her series, I am sure this is a nice addition to round out the world. We see several characters who are obviously part of the larger series. However, without knowing their backstory I was still able to appreciate Mattie and Julian’s beautiful May-December romance.

Mattie is so far in the closet he is has never done more than think about being with another man. Julian is so far out of the closet he has been beat up more than once for his affectations. His family is less than supportive, to the point of abuse. Mattie, in contrast, is trying to act as straight as possible but has a pretty awesome family. Unfortunately, we don’t get to know them quite as well as I would have liked. I might have to read Book 1 of the series to learn more about them.

That said, I loved Julian and Mattie together. Julian is patient and kind despite his auspicious beginnings. Mattie is timid and scared, but Julian helps his natural confidence and protectiveness come out. They are good for each other. Yes, there are some hot scenes, but I liked the connection between the characters so much more than those scenes.

I appreciate that neither character was an Adonis or the most beautiful man on the planet… but they were perfect in each other’s eyes. Julian alludes many times to him being under-endowed. I love that. It is so rare in the romance genre.

I will be interested to see what else Ms. Rose has for the M/M Romance genre.
