Kelly Harding has become good friends with Seiran Rou, originally the only male witch to actually train in magic. Now after a couple trying months and several crazy plots to kill Seiran, Kelly suggests a ski vacation to help them all relax—even if Kelly does have to work to keep his taboo crush on Seiran’s brother, Jamie, under wraps. But their getaway becomes a fight for survival when a magic fueled blizzard strands them in the middle of nowhere…with a killer.
When visions of a tower and a dying man fueling a deadly spell begin to fill Kelly’s head, he realizes he has to try to save his new family. Jamie isn’t about to let him go alone—no matter how against a relationship with his little brother’s best friend he might be. But their goals are the same: Protect Seiran, stop the spell, and make it home in one piece. It will take a brush with death to make them understand how deep their feelings go, and none of them will make it out unchanged.
I first read Conviction by Lissa Kasey many moons ago. Honestly, it has been so long that I can’t remember a lot of specifics about it. I do remember thinking it was the weakest of the Dominion stories to date. It was more of an aside than a furthering of the overall story arc.
Since that first reading, Conviction has undergone a major overhaul. The second edition is longer, tighter, more detailed, and just overall a better fit with the Dominion world Kasey has created. It furthers the overall story arc started with Inheritance and continued in Reclamation. As such, I highly recommend that it is read in order with Inheritance and Reclamation.
Honestly, I think I am going to have to go in for another read of all three books to catch all the links Kasey has created. I think I will get something out of each successive read. This is a complex world, with a number of powers in opposition and individuals with their own agenda.
At the heart of the story is of course Sieran Rou. However, unlike the first two installments, this story is told while alternating Jamie and Kelly’s first-person points of view. We get to know two of the three most important people in Sei’s life. We get to see Kelly come into his own as a witch. We get to see why Jamie is so protective of Sei, and to an extent Kelly. We also get to experience both men’s insecurities.
While we solve on mystery, many questions are raised for examination later in the series. Sei and Kelly have a fight ahead of them. We are now equipped to head into the fight with them.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
