Jackie Black is a cowboy and sorcerer and proud of both. He spends his days breaking curses and locating items of interest for other abnormals. His pride and joy are the alchemy-enhanced pistols at his hips. The love of his life is Roman, a businessman and witch. Tired of living several states apart, Jackie decides to surprise Roman by moving closer.
But instead of being a happy surprise, Jackie finds himself the victim of an unpleasant one. Alone in a strange city, with nowhere to go and his world in pieces, Jackie is taken in by an old man who says he is a paranormal detective and could use someone of Jackie’s power and abilities to catch a killer.
Okay, let’s see if I can keep all the books in this series straight. I read them all back to back to back; I just couldn’t help myself. Once I read Dance with the Devil, I was completely hooked. I even read a historical (gasp!) and made my husband start the series. So if you have gotten to this review, you already know this, however. So let’s talk about a sorcerer cowboy, demons, and evil men.
First of all, this book just whet my appetite for a continuation of this series. As with all the books before it, it built on the world Derr had already created and gave us some new characters to love. If you have read the series in order, then you know that we met Jackie briefly in The Glass Coffin. I honestly don’t remember if he was mentioned in other stories or not. We also heard about his relationship with Roman in that installment and his planned move to DeRosier’s territory.
Once he gets to DeRosier’s territory, all hell breaks loose (yes, that is a recurring theme in this series). Along the way he learns just how depraved some people in the abnormal (and normal) world can be. We learn more about how the whole Consort thing works, and we find new characters to love.
I don’t want to give away any of the plot of this story, as I want you to read this whole series. I will say, however, that we get to see some of our favorite characters from previous novels and enjoy the world Derr has created for a few more hours.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
