Title: Alpha Coder
Author: Kathryn Sparrow
Publisher: Loose Id
Cover Artist: Mina Carter
Genre: Fantasy, Gay, Paranormal
As the second son, Liam Reed never expected to be a werewolf Alpha. He preferred to develop software for Soft Corp, but when his brother Jason died in a car accident, their father forced Liam to assume leadership of the pack. Liam plans to govern with compassion, instead of ruling through fear, but pack member Bradley Karr undermines Liam’s leadership, biding his time before challenging for Alpha. Tired of pack politics, all Liam wants is to program and find his mate, but he fears that neither is in his future.
When his mate, werewolf Cody Jones, starts working at Soft Corp as Liam’s intern, sparks fly. However, a relationship with Cody could get them both fired for fraternization. And, that’s not the worst problem. Cody doesn’t seem to accept Liam as his mate.
Liam’s only chance at happiness is to win Cody over while keeping their relationship a secret. But really, Cody would never stay with an introverted geek like him, an ineffectual Alpha failing to live up to his brother’s legacy. Would he?
Just a Little Internet Research…
Hi, my name is Kathryn Sparrow. I’m the author of Alpha Coder. Thanks to Prism Book Alliance for hosting me today.
When Liam learns his mate is a man, he’s shocked. He’d never really thought about having sex with a man before. Liam had always known that he had a mate out there, somewhere, so he never really thought about his sexuality. His family and the pack expected that he would like girls and the truth was no one was really attractive to him so he dated girls and hoped to meet his mate.
The day he meets Cody, he learns what he was missing and sees what real attraction is for the first time.
When a geek like Liam is faced with something new one of the most common responses I have seen is for said geek to head for the nearest computer to do some Internet research on the topic. In this case, when Liam realizes he’s never considered gay sex before he heads for Google to do some research
I’ve had some interesting reactions to earlier versions of this scene. There were two things my critique partners commented on.
It’s true that some companies monitor their employee’s internet usage. It’s not difficult for them to track such activity. Some companies restrict what an employee can access. Researching sex at work could be considered inappropriate. I’ve worked at some companies where this would be the case and other companies that didn’t bother to track this information.
However, my partners had a point. Liam wouldn’t want people knowing he was researching gay sex. He and Cody had to keep their relationship a secret since it violated the company’s non-fraternization policy.
However, I reasoned, Liam’s also a software engineer and would be familiar with how such monitoring was done. In the final version of the scene, I gave him a script he could run, eraseHistory.pl, that would disable the company monitoring.
The pl on the end means this is a script written in a programming language called Perl. Perl is a language that is used for a variety of purposes and would be capable of making the changes to his computer that Liam needed.
He’s watching porn?!
No, Liam is not watching porn. Not that there is anything wrong with porn. Liam has watched his share. But that wasn’t what Liam was interested in at that moment. He wanted a more academic view of the details of actual gay sex. Watching porn would have been like watching a movie that is set in a math class hoping to learn math.
He was looking for articles that get into the mechanics and describe how it works and what he would need to know to actually have sex with Cody. One book Liam found and loaded onto his smart phone’s reader app was The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Men.
Any topic from how to repair a leaky roof, to how to parent an ADHD child, to how to have sex, geeks turn to the Internet to find answers. It’s a useful resource. Sometimes the information you find is even correct.
Liam’s sleepy mind continued to wander. He had enough willpower to push his fear to the side, but he was too out of it to concentrate. So his mind strayed to sex.
He realized he’d never thought about being with a guy before, and he didn’t even really know what to do. What did two guys do to make love? He smiled. Not the obvious stuff, tab A goes in slot B. But the details were a little fuzzy. Not that he and Cody were close to that, but having the knowledge couldn’t hurt.
The office was practically deserted. No one would notice if he did a little Internet research.
He brought up a terminal window and ran the shell script, eraseHistory.pl, that had been floating around the intranet for Soft Corp. The script kept the IT department from recording his browsing history. Management didn’t need to know he was reading about sex, even if it was well before business hours.
As he brought up his browser, he contemplated what to type into the search engine to get the kind of articles he was hoping to read.
* * * *
Hmmm…I doubt I have any lube in the house, Liam thought as he perused yet another Internet article on rainbowproud.com. He brought up another browser window and clicked on the link for Amazon. A few keystrokes, a few clicks, and a bottle was on its way overnight. Gotta love the Internet.
Panic seized Liam, sending a shiver up his skin. What would Cody do? Would he give Liam a chance? He seemed like he would, but then he hadn’t said he would come back tonight. What if he rejects me?

About the Author
Kathryn Sparrow has had stories spinning around in her head her whole life and finally decided it was time to write them down. For twenty years, she worked in the Software Industry as a Software Quality Engineer, so she gets a particular thrill including geeks in her stories. Now, she is a stay-home mom although she thinks that’s a terrible name for the job since she spends so much time driving her kids to their various activities. She lives in Massachusetts with her geek husband and adorable, infuriating daughters, who are too smart for their Mommy’s own good. If she had spare time she would spend it knitting, crocheting, cross stitching, and doing any other handicrafts that caught her fancy.
