When Evan and Brennan moved in with their boyfriends, Alek and Luka, they knew things would be complicated, but as their privacy gets eroded, and people around them begin to notice the tangled nature of the four-way relationship, coping becomes a struggle. After Brennan leaves on a brief trip home, and Evan remains behind to enjoy the full attention of both Alek and Luka, the careful balance of things gets thrown off.
Ex-boyfriends surface, haunting Evan and Brennan in similar ways as regret for poor choices threatens their happiness, and the sexual freedom displayed earlier in their lives draws predators willing to use violence, coercion, mind-games and force to take what they want. Though Luka and Alek struggle to protect those they love, it soon becomes clear that the dangers surrounding them will find ways to rush in, trying to take what belongs to them.
The Trouble with Being a Foursome
My newest release, Double Heat, is about two sets of identical twins in a polyamorous and incestuous four-way relationship. It’s the third book in the series and, where the first two books established how these four men got together, and why they are together, Double Heat is mainly about the struggles they face as a foursome made up of two sets of twins.
The dynamics of their lives are unique because the brotherly bonds are always there, giving a strong family connection and loyalty through two of the relationships – Alek with Luka, and Evan with Brennan. No matter what, the pairs of brothers have vowed they will always be there for their sibling. Neither the Popovićs, nor Evan and Brennan have a strong support system from their families. For the most part, all they have is each other. That’s the underlying core of the foursome, but there are several other relationships happening within it – Evan with Alek, Evan with Luka, Brennan with Alek, and so on. The complexity poses a lot of challenges that are never faced by those of us who have only dealt with the one-on-one reality of being a couple. If one person or one pair is out of sorts, it throws everyone off.
By this third book, the boys have mostly figured out the specific types of love they have for each other, and the strength of their devotion. They are committed. But how to go about the practical reality of living, day to day? Running errands, meeting new friends, dividing chores, and constantly deciding how honest to be and with whom, are just some of the situations that require quick problem solving, with possibly drastic consequences.
The guys realize they draw stares wherever they go, because they are visual oddity of two sets of identical twins. They can’t fly under the radar even if they wanted to, but they know if people discovered they were a gay, incestuous foursome, it’s likely they’d face discrimination, hatred, or even violence. Three of the guys are out as being gay or bisexual with their friends and employers. Evan is not. From the start, because of this, rules need to be established regarding how to behave in public, as well as at home.
Of course, a big danger zone for them is sex. To avoid jealousy, the guys realize that whenever some of them have sex with each other, they need to tell whoever else in the foursome wasn’t involved what happened. It’s a way to head off surprises and hurt feelings and it’s one of their basic rules. Another is that whenever something is bothering someone, they need to speak up about it. It’s much easier for secrets to fall through the cracks when group dynamics are at play. The intimacy of reading a lover’s constantly fluctuating emotional state is tougher to manage when there are four rather than two. For example, because Evan has a quieter temperament, it’s all too easy for him to stay silent about his worries and let his more boisterous lovers draw the group’s attention.
And because two of them are teenagers, two of them in their mid-twenties, things can get kind of crazy. There’s plenty of joking when someone’s trying to be seriously sincere. There are raging hormones and wild lust. There are rash decisions and moments of sudden group panic. Everything is amplified and expanded beyond the bounds of a traditional relationship.
All of this gets the twins in plenty of trouble, but another benefit of being a quartet is there are that many more people ready and eager to have your back, or cuddle as close as is needed to give an abundance of comfort.
