Title: My Hero (Audio book)
Author: Max Vos
Publisher: Self Published
Narrator: Jared Bradford
Genre: Contemporary, M/M Romance

Blurb:

This is a gay male romance with explicit sexual situations between men.

When he was 16 years old, Rich Miller saved a young man from drowning at his local pool. Little did he know that years later, as a senior in college and Olympic diving hopeful, Rich would meet up once again with Johnny Milloway, now a big football player – and when Rich says big, he really means “bear”. The shy jock remembers his saviour, and the two men become friends.

Johnny isn’t put off by the fact that Rich is gay. In fact, the more time he spends with Rich, the more curious he becomes. Johnny wants to know all kinds of things – what it’s like to kiss a guy, for instance. Only it doesn’t stop there…

Rich finds it difficult to believe that this relationship can go anywhere. Johnny is straight, and Rich isn’t prepared to deal with the heartache he knows will come his way in the future. He has enough on his plate as it is – the worlds are just around the corner. His father would rather watch a football game than spend time watching his son dive. What he doesn’t count on is Johnny, who can be very determined. And having Johnny in his life proves to be a catalyst for some pretty earth-shattering changes.

Three years ago I sat, bored, recently retired with nothing to do. The highlight of my summer was the 2012 Olympics, being held in London. I’ve always enjoyed the Olympics; summer is my preference since I really don’t much care much for the cold or snow.

During this same time, I was also keeping an eye out on the summer training camps for college football, specifically my favorite team, the team I grew up with, the Tennessee Volunteers. Back and forth I went, switching channels, trying to keep up with both. It was during this time that a story began to take shape. My Hero was born.

I was still a new unknown writer with little skill and untrained. Basically, I had no idea what I was doing. That didn’t matter to me, I had a story in my head that needed to come out. Johnny and Rich were stuck in my head and they weren’t going to be quiet until they told their story.

The one thing I remembered from English composition class in high school was to write what you know. That is exactly what I did. The story takes place where I grew up, where I spent a lot of my early adulthood and I drew upon people and places that I knew.

It became a best seller, amazingly enough, even with all its flaws, bad editing being the primary problem. I went back through it recently and was embarrassed at how many issues I found. I chalk that up to more experience and a more trained eye.

I got the idea of turning My Hero into an audio book last October when a friend was visiting. It seems that they are really popular, which was news to me. I mean I’ve seen them around and have seen where other authors are doing them, primarily Dreamspinner Press. I just never thought about doing it myself.

It has been a long journey and quite the learning curve. I can’t even tell you how many auditions I listened to. There were some okay ones, and then there were the really not so good ones. But when I heard Jared Bradford sing, I had a feeling that he was it.

A mutual friend of mine sent me a link to some of his music and I was blown away. I asked for an introduction and I encouraged him to do an audition for My Hero. He did and that’s history, as they say. He agreed and we now have a great product.

It was a joy working with Jarred. He got the accents, being from the Southern United States. He could relate to the characters and basically, he nailed it. I couldn’t have been more pleased. There were times when I was listening to what he’d done and I would think, ‘Wow, I wrote that?’.

I think what I was most surprised hearing the characters come alive. The voices in my head were actually talking. I could hear them. What I didn’t expect, now that I’m almost finished writing the sequel, is the voices are stronger. When I go back and read what I’ve already written, I then hear Jared reading the manuscript.

For anyone who read the book, you really need to hear its narration. If it blew me out of the water, I think you will be too. It really is that good. Oh, and don’t worry, I will definitely get Jared to do the sequel. Of course, we’re already talking about him doing another book while I finish up the sequel. I have a feeling that Mr. Jared Bradford is going to have a stellar career in doing audio books.

I’d like to thank May Wilson for making such a great book/audio trailer for me.
