Life has been known by a series of constants: Violence, anger, drugs, sex, death, heartbreak, pain, fear and the most common, hunger; Always hunger. Not the kind that can be satisfied with food, but the kind born of circumstance. The kind that not only claws within a gut, but settles into a heart, consumes a mind. Deeper—Encircles, penetrates the soul. Hunger for something more, something better, safer. Always just out of grasp—Craving—Starved.
It’s part of me.
Who I am.
Born of blood and violence, hunger is my fate.
Yet, the slightest things can change the directions of a life. An unplanned circumstance, random act—a connection—a chance event, like a lightning strike, fate is trumped.
Jamie is my lightning strike.
Tek Cain was cultivated from birth to lead the motorcycle gang, Crimson Eight. Jamie Ryan, his best friend, is destined to be his second. But forbidden desires have them questioning everything they know, and an undeniable bond makes them want more than their supposed brotherhood can provide. Their love could get them killed, but they are bound to each other—from the cradle to the grave.
Sometimes when you read a book a second time you see a different angle and you enjoy it more than you did originally. This is exactly what happened to me with Roped this time round. I think a big factor in that is when I read it the first time I had just read the previous three books which revolve around the club. This book has a very different feel to it and is a much darker read.
When you are born into something and everyone places their expectations on you it can be very difficult to escape and forge out your own life. This is exactly what happened to Tek and Jamie. Born into the Crimson 8 MC club, a club that lives by the rules of violence and a strict hierarchy. A club that treats women like ‘things’ that deals drugs and guns, that uses fear and violence to make you tow the line.
Tek was brought up to lead the club and Jamie was always expected to be his right hand man. Never in any of the expectations placed on these two men did anyone think they would love each other. Being gay is not allowed – it is very definitely one of the rules!
Roped is almost two stories. The first part of the book sees Tek and Jamie coming into adulthood and the stark reality of what their life is about. Where an 18 year old boy is expected to pick up a gun and shoot another man. Where that same boy lives in fear of being shot if anyone finds out how close he really is to his best friend. The picture painted is bleak and is very unlike the rest of the series. Your heart will bleed for Tek, for what he has to do and what he will then have to live with.
The second part of the story is easier to read but the fear is still there. The fear of people realising you are not really dead and what that would mean if they came after you. Tek and Jamie escape to New York but you never get the feeling they are truly free. They find work at a high end BDSM club and they make some good friends but there is still the constant looking over their shoulder. When I read this book the first time I never really ‘felt’ the dynamics between them when they tried some kink for the first time. This time reading it felt different and so much better. It all seemed to click into place and I have no idea why that was. When I finished it the first time I said that it felt like there was more to come – that feeling still remained this time too. Fingers crossed their lives get easier in the future!
Rusty Topsfield has been a bit hit and miss for me previously but I think he got this one just right. He added something to this story for me personally that I didn’t feel the first time I read it so for me it was a winner.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
