Sean Hutchins is having the worst day of his life…
After losing what he thought was his dream job, Sean Hutchins walks away to suddenly find not only his professional life, but also his personal life, falling apart. Seeking comfort in his best friend Cassie, the last person Sean expects to run into is Cassie’s big brother—and Sean’s long time crush—Cal.
Cal is supposed to be on vacation visiting his baby sister, not babysitting her and her best friend, Sean. And he definitely is not supposed to be staring at Sean’s hot ass. But after spending some time with the guy, Cal finds himself having confusing feelings for him.
Should Cal act on his attraction? And can Sean find a way to put back the broken pieces of his heart and his life?
Then Came Cal was a much needed pleasant surprise. Lee Barrows is a new author and did an incredible job right out of the gate. I didn’t realize this was a debut book until after I’d already read it. I wouldn’t have guessed it judging by their strong writing style.
The novella centers around Sean and Cal. They’ve known each for years because Cal is the older brother of Sean’s best friend. Sean has had a crush on Cal for a long time but Cal has always treated him more like an annoyance.
Sean has a very bad day when he’s fired then goes home to find his roommate/kinda boyfriend in the middle of a wild orgy. He runs to Cassie, his best friend, for support. Cal is visiting Cassie and runs into Sean on his way to the bar to get laid. Cal has always been about anonymous sex and never had any interest in a relationship.
At the bar Cal can’t get Sean off his mind, even when there’s a guy on his knees in front of Cal. He’s as surprised as the other guy when he cuts the encounter loose so he can find out how Sean is doing.
At first I was somewhat taken aback by Cal’s seemingly sudden interest in Sean, but it turns out Sean’s interest isn’t one-sided. Cal’s been attracted to Sean for years but been afraid to admit it. Cal sees Sean in a new light when Sean stands up to his asshole ex and Cal can no longer deny his feelings. The sex between these two guys was so freaking hot.
I had been worried that this was going to be insta-love but that wasn’t the case. Even though they are together at the end of the story and planning a future, they don’t use the L word. Even with years of denied desires it would’ve been too soon.
I will definitely been checking out any future work by Lee Barrows, and would be thrilled if we got to see Cal and Sean again.
For sure a new author to check out.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
