On Perfect Harmony, the ambitious competitors heat things up on stage and off…
Cody Rivers is determined to be a rock star, but couch-surfing between bar shows gets old fast. Joining an a cappella group for a new singing competition show could be his last chance at real fame—unless the college boy from the heart of the country messes it up for him. Lucas Norwood is everything gothy, glittery Cody is not—conservative, clean-cut, and virginal. But when a twist in the show forces them together, even the sweetest songs get steamy as the attraction between them lights up the stage. Lucas wants to take it slow, but Cody’s singing a different tune—and this time it maybe a love song…
Cody River is a couch surfing, harsh, man whore wannabe singing star who is convinced he is one step away from stardom. His latest aim for fame is as part of a cappella group on a reality TV show and nothing is going to step in his way. His days of sleeping in his van and being unable to pay his bills will soon be over if he can just keep him mind on the prize. Initially Cody comes across as a bit of a jerk who only cares about himself but as the story unfolds it’s easy to see how he has become the person he is when he has only had himself to rely on for so many years.
Lucas Norwood is also a contestant in the completion but he couldn’t be more unlike Cody in the way he dresses, the way he thinks and the way he lives his life. His parents and their attitude made me think of a freaky kind of Stepford couple in the way they behaved towards him. Lucas attends a school where they sign a pledge of abstinence, he is always immaculately dressed with creases in his khakis and he believes the devil will get him if he goes anywhere near a gay bar.
When Lucas joins Cody’s band in a sort of knock out situation sparks fly. Cody is a very sexual person all the time but for him it’s just a way of getting off, a stress reliever or a way for him to get something that he wants. Lucas is a ball of repressed sexual tension ready to explode and he is also submissive with some very clear images about what he wants when he eventually allows himself to have sex. Living by a code of abstinence has meant he turned to online porn and although he has zero experience he has high expectations and a lot of ideas and suddenly Cody is starring in every single one of them.
As Lucas slowly loses sight of the promises he has made to himself and gives more and more of himself to Cody the lines blur for both of them. Cody has never had any inclination to get serious with anyone but suddenly the thought of not having Lucas around makes his heart hurt. Lucas is falling in love but is never sure of how Cody really feels. For all the attention the pair give to each other neither one of them is good with communication until it is nearly too late.
This book for me was all about discovery. Lucas discovered a whole new side of himself that hadn’t been allowed or had been frowned on by his friends and family. He was a boy that was supposed to be openly gay at school but it seemed he could only be open if he was acting like the rest of his straight friends, the schools compromise of a GSA was not really supporting Lucas but more glossing over the fact with a little bit of sugar. It felt like they were saying ‘yes, you can be gay just don’t BE gay’. Cody discovered that there was actually more than just him that mattered in the universe and that although bad things had happened to him he was capable of love and of being a nice person.
The last fantastic fact about this book is that it’s the first in a new series….which means we get more!
