He’d give his life to protect the president’s son. But he never expected to risk his heart.

Growing up gay in the White House hasn’t been easy for Rafael Castillo. Codenamed “Valor” by the Secret Service, Rafa feels anything but brave as he hides in the closet and tries to stay below the radar in his last year of college. His father’s presidency is almost over, and he just needs to stick to his carefully crafted plan. Once his family’s out of the spotlight, he can be honest with his conservative parents about his sexuality and his dream of being a chef.

It’s definitely not part of Rafa’s plan to get a new Secret Service agent who’s a walking wet dream, but he’s made it this long keeping his desires to himself. Besides, it’s not like Shane Kendrick would even look at him twice if it wasn’t his job.

Shane’s worked his way up through the Secret Service ranks, and while protecting the president’s shy, boring son isn’t his dream White House assignment, it’s an easy enough task since no one pays Rafa much attention. He discovers there’s a vibrant young man beneath the timid public shell, and while he knows Rafa has a crush on him, he assures himself it’s harmless. Shane’s never had room for romance in his life, and he’d certainly never cross that line with a protectee. Keeping Rafa safe at any cost is Shane’s mission.

But as Rafa gets under his skin, will they both put their hearts on the line?

My View:

Keira Andrews is yet to write a book that I don’t love and Valor On The Move may just have taken the top spot! This book had a little bit of everything, was impossible to put down and left me with a craving for more when it ended.

Twenty One year old Rafa is the youngest son of the current President. His brothers and sisters are all living away from the White House and are all successful, confident and busy with their own lives. Rafa feels lonely and forgotten and he is struggling living under the guise he has set up for himself, his parents want to plan out his future for him but when his father’s last term in office ends in a few months he has very different plans for himself. He just has to make it for the last few months……..

When Shane Kendrick, Rafa’s new secret service agent, walks through the door those few months immediately become harder. The man is a walking wet dream in Rafa’s eyes and all his carefully constructed walls start teetering. Shane sees his move to the White House as a career gold star even if it is just to look after the youngest son known as the mouse. His new charge seems to be impeccably behaved and he doesn’t expect any trouble.

Shane is 40 years old and very much a loner who is married to his job. He is still not over the grief of losing his parents and he carries round a heavy dose of guilt regarding the way they died. He only has friends because a few of them choose to stay in contact with him whereas he makes no effort at all. It soon becomes obvious to him that Rafa is hiding a pretty big secret and that the much younger man is harbouring a crush on him but Shane is his usual cool and flippant self and sees nothing to worry about.

Against his mother’s wishes, she sees it as demeaning, Rafa loves to cook and often sneaks ingredients from the main kitchen to practise him hobby. He dreams of being a chef but just like everything else important in his life this has to wait and be a secret. When he starts inviting Shane to the ‘diet kitchen’ late at night to taste his recipes there is a change in their relationship. Agents aren’t supposed to have private or personal conversations with their charges, nor are they supposed to develop feelings and wonder what they would look like naked! Shane fights his feelings but Rafa is not to be swayed and there is a slow build-up of sexual angst between the pair. Rafa is not afraid to fight dirty and has quite the potty mouth when it comes to asking for what he wants leaving Shane running off for frequent cold showers.

Lots of things happen suddenly and at the same time in this story and they all culminate in Rafa being in danger. Shane’s utter determination to keep him safe is the turning point in the relationship and one that neither can forget nor simply walk away from. When double crossing agents, family drama and finally a whole lot of truths are laid out and dealt with Rafa is absolutely determined about what he wants and goes off to get it.
