Title: Retribution (Tribute #2)
Author: Kate Pearce
Publisher: Riptide
Cover Artist: Lou Harper
Genre: Gay Fiction

Blurb:

Cheated out of his exit from the Tribute program, Kai Mexr is forced to return as a trainer for one more year. His trainee, Aled Price, is an idealistic Mitan patriot who Kai struggles not to loathe on sight, and who seems up for any challenge Kai sets him. As Aled learns to give up control and endure the program’s worst, Kai is drawn into an intense sexual game that leaves him wanting more.

But then Aled must fulfill his duty as Tribute. He must endure the Ungrich—or die.

When Aled returns, it takes Kai’s ruthless presence to pull his trainee back from the brink of madness. Surviving the Ungrich makes Aled doubt his blind allegiance to his planet—and to everything else he’d never thought to question. But with Kai at his side, Aled finds a new cause to believe in. And with the help of master trainer Akran and his partner Anna Lee, Aled and Kai forge unbreakable allegiances of blood, sex, and love that could save the entire planet from the Ungrich for good.

I have to admit, that when I was writing the Tribute series I was aware that they weren’t going to work for the majority of the romance buying public. There are too many dark elements in the books to make them generally acceptable. The second book, Retribution is not only the darkest book, but the ending is a bit ambiguous because in my mind there were always going to be three books, which made up the whole story.

A lot of readers don’t like cliffhangers or happy for now books. I remember actually screaming out loud once when the author changed everything I thought I knew in the last few paragraphs of her book. As she wrote one book every three years, I knew I was in for a long excruciating wait to find out what was going on. Luckily, with the Tribute series you have options.

It’s also hard for an author to keep everything straight when you write more than one book in a series. I ended up with nine full Simply… novels and two novellas. Sometimes my readers remember which book contains what better than I do. The beauty of writing the Tribute trilogy is that all together the three parts make up one big book, which if you don’t like to wait, I’d recommend getting in one unit. Also writing them all so close together meant although the process got a bit complicated at times. I was unlikely to forget anything vital.

I know some readers won’t even pick up a series until they are certain that it finishes because they’ve been burned too many times and left hanging. I’ve had that happen to me as a reader and as an author and it’s not fun. Thankfully, the Tribute series comes out in three months, Sacrifice in September, Retribution in October and Triumph in November, so even if you curse me in the middle, you’ll soon have all the answers.

  1. If it’s a generally satisfying story with a few subtle threads left open for a sequel, that’s fine. A brazen grab to lure people into the next volume turns me off, though…

  2. I don’t mind cliff hangers as long as it doesn’t take too long before the sequels are published because then I always feel the need to re-read the prior book to remember the entire story.

  3. I try to avoid cliffhangers, so sometimes I am one of those people who waits for all of the books to be out before I read them, especially if I know they’re coming quickly. Thanks for the post and the chance to win!

  4. Congrats on the new release Kate! You’re a new author for me and I’ve added the series to my wishlist.

  5. I do not really like cliffhangers… they make me anxious. So if I know there is one, I normally wait till the series is complete to buy the all the books together and avoid waiting for the next instalment…
The book sounds great. Thank you for the giveaway

  6. Í’m not a big fan of cliffhangers so i would appreciate it if the author tells in the blurb that there is a cliffhanger that way i can decide to wait for the whole serie so i can read them and don’t have to worry about the cliffhanger.

thanks for this post and the giveaway chance.
