The Scarecrow – Free Halloween Story

Scott stared out the window at mile marker 215 and cringed as the car he drove bucked and shook and rattled to as the engine began to die. The gas gauge had been on ‘E’ for a while, since before he took a wrong turn at a fork in the road. The old Crown Victoria LTD, the land yacht as his friends call it, sailed right over to the curb where it quaked one final time and then gave up the ghost. Scott looked at the world around him as his laugh turned into sobs.

My View:

This is really cool. I love the set up and it kept me guessing most of the way. The creep factor is spot on! You might read this particular point more than once in this short review.

The atmosphere is wonderfully all-surrounding: I could feel the old country road asphalt under my hands, I could hear those huffs of breath, I could see the smoky headlights piercing the darkness. Every bit of it pulled me into the story, like I’d stepped into a movie.

I love when an author can cause me to suspend disbelief and allow me to truly enjoy the supernatural, timey wimey twisty bends in reality, and the aftermath of it all. Done and done! Not once did I feel disconnected or lose my touch on this clever, creep-tastic morsel of All Hallow’s Eve fun.

Leading up to the climax, things were moving fast and I think some of those twists became a bit blurry, losing some of their impact. Despite that, the ending is kick ass, made me think, and I wanted more. A level of seriousness finds its way in as we reach the final scene.

This is creepy (I told you!), sweet, bittersweet, and mysterious. A fantastic first Halloween treat for me this year! And it’s free on the author’s site through the end of the month. 🙂
