A wanted man after the destruction of the Iron Butterfly Casino, Nox Boyet must flee the island of Manhattan—the only home he’s ever known. Together with Cade, Sam, and the rest of their ragtag group, Nox must find a place to hide from the District Police and the violent group of unknown drug dealers on his tail.
The solution—the Creel family farm in South Carolina.
But home isn’t quite sweet for Cade, the prodigal son. As Cade struggles with his own secrets, shadows of the past threaten not only Nox’s life, but his relationship with his son, Sam.
Nox knows there will never be peace unless he finds the answers to all his questions—and the answers lie back on the island. Cade and the others must choose their paths—find safety or follow the Vigilante into the darkness of the city? The city where Nox will come face-to-face with the past.
If you thought book 1 was confusing, and I did, then book 2 will probably not give you all the answers you are looking for! This is a rollercoaster as we join Nox and his ragtag group of vigilantes.
My first thoughts on this series is it’s not romance. You may get a little along the way and when it’s time to wrap the series up I am hoping for a lot more but at this stage Nox is too involved in finding those responsible to be anywhere near romantic. Having said that I do think he has strong feelings for Cade and you certainly see more emotion from him in this book.
The group have escaped the city but it’s no picnic. Being stuck on a boat in one hell of a storm with nobody really trusting each other is a dire predicament to find yourself in. Sam is really unwell and his body is battered from the explosion and for the first time ever Nox is showing signs of being unsure of himself.
Watching Nox struggle between wanting a bit of normality and the need for revenge eating him up is interesting. Staying at Cade’s farm reminds him what a quiet life could be like but his overriding need is to keep everyone safe and until he can ensure that all bets are off. Cade is feeling unsure of himself without the trappings of his previous lifestyle and returning home means he has to face his past.
LJ was a great addition to the story and a total surprise for Cade who is left speechless for once in his life. Sam is falling in love and for the first time we see him making strides for his independence which may or may not be hampered when he learns the family secret.
Tere Michaels drags you into this story and keeps you there through all the twists and turns. It is very cleverly thought out, frustrating as hell when the answer always seems to be just one step away, and the ending had me climbing the walls! More secrets are exposed and who would have thought of that one? Not me, that’s for sure!
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
