Deputy Roman Charsguard survived Afghanistan where he lost his best friend—his K-9 handler James. Roman was a military dog until two years ago when he developed the ability to shift into a human. It’s not easy to learn how to be a man. He found a place to live in Mad Creek, a haven for the secret world of dog shifters. Finding a reason to live has been harder. That is, until a certain human walks into the Mad Creek Sheriff’s office and starts making trouble.
Matt Barclay has the worst luck. First he was shot in a SWAT drug raid, then he was sent as DEA investigator to Mad Creek, a little town in the California mountains. Matt’s job is to keep a lookout for illegal drug farms, but nobody in the town wants him there. And then there’s Roman, Matt’s erstwhile baby-sitter. He’s the hottest guy Matt’s ever seen, even if he is a bit peculiar. If the town doesn’t kill him, sexual frustration just might.
The town is counting on Roman to prevent Matt from learning about dog shifters, Matt’s counting on Roman to be his work partner and tell him the truth, and Roman’s trying to navigate love, sex, and a whole lot of messy human emotions. Who knew it was so complicated to walk like a man?
I liked Lance and Tim in the first book a lot. I LOVED Matt and Roman in this book!
We are back in Mad Creek but this book has a few differences from the first one and honestly it will make you laugh until you cry. Humans who can shift into dogs are known as quickened and there are two types. The first is like Lance who was born with the ability and luckily for him was surrounded by people just like him from birth. The second is like Roman who only knew of his human side as an adult and initially had no support. Roman was lucky to find the town of Mad Creek, to find his pack and gain their support but even so two years on he still struggles.
Prepare to cry as you learn of Roman’s previous life and the last minutes he spends with his handler and the man he loved more than anything else and his subsequent feelings of becoming a man. It’s both sad and funny as he learns to navigate his new body and learns how the human world works. He loves his hands! When he discovers what his penis can do he loves that even more. There are a few mind boggling conversations with his best friend Lance as he discovers sex.
Matt works for the DEA and is sent to Mad Creek to keep an eye out for drug dealers. He is the closeted son of a General who has lived his life in the shadow of his dead brother. He also has a pretend fiancé and is positive that something strange is happening in this small town and that more than one person is keeping him from finding out what it is.
Matt and Roman are good together. As Matt wobbles at the doors of his closet with small innuendo that goes straight over Romans head there are crossed wires and confusion and yes again – hilarity. On top of their relationship/friendship problems the bad guys have move into town and are setting up shop and the General keeps dropping by with his hard assed rhetoric.
This book was just fun!
