Writing A Rom Com
Hi, I’m Alice Griffiths! Co-writer with Leta Blake on the Wake Up Married serial. This is my first book, my first publishing experience, and my first guest blog post! I’m thrilled to be here!
I wanted to talk about our choice to write an episodic romantic comedy today. There’s just something about a romantic comedy, or rom com, that is hard to resist. When one of my faves comes on the TV, without a doubt, no matter how many times I’ve already seen it, I will watch it again. Every. Single. Time.
The way I see it, a good rom com should be comforting, it ought to make you feel warm and fuzzy, and it should never get old. I never tire of watching two people make a connection and fall in love. Throw in some belly laughs and, for me, it’s the complete package.
Which is just one reason why Leta Blake and I wanted to write a romantic comedy together.
Now, when it comes to how those people fall in love, I also have my preferred methods. My personal favourite would have to be the hate-to-love trope. Two people who hate each other at first sight but slowly come to realise they love each other. It worked for Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice and just as well for Bridget and Darcy in the inspired-by Bridget Jones’s Diary. Going on the journey with the characters while their feelings thaw and gradually the spark of love blooms is such a joy.
My co-writer on the Wake Up Married serial, Leta Blake, and I were definitely inspired by the idea of hate-to-love in the creation of this series.
10 Things I Hate About You. It ticks all the boxes for me. It has a love-to-hate relationship, plenty of laughs and a charming leading man, the wonderful and sadly missed Heath Ledger. Julia Stiles’ Kat is a great foil for him, and to me, that’s the key. There has to be great chemistry and banter between the protagonists for a rom com to work.
Leta and I also both love a lot of com in our rom so there are a lot of laughs in the series too (we hope)!
Of course, I’m also a sucker for pure romance, too. I’m a huge fan of the gay romance Shelter, an achingly sweet tale of wannabe artist Zach and his burgeoning relationship with his best friend’s older brother Shaun. Set among the sand and surf of California, there are very few laughs but it’s a pure joy watching these two come together. Their blossoming love is as warm as the summer sun and definitely one of the most romantic movies I’ve ever seen.
Leta and I wanted to capture all the best things about rom coms (hijinks, hate-to-love, unfolding tenderness) in the Wake Up Married serial. And we hope that we have! Episode 1 (Will & Patrick Wake Up Married) and Episode 2 (Will & Patrick Meet the Family) are already out. Episode 3 (Will & Patrick Do the Holidays) will be out November 23 and the final three instalments of the serial will be out in the new year. We’re incredibly pleased with the reception the serial has received so far and hope that everyone continues to enjoy the books.
