Title: Will & Patrick Meet the Family
Author: Leta Blake & Alice Griffiths
Publisher: *Not Listed
Cover Artist: unknown
Follow Will & Patrick as they cope with the fallout from their Vegas wedding in this second installment of the romantic-comedy serial, Wake Up Married, by best-selling author Leta Blake and newcomer Alice Griffiths!
Meeting the family is challenging for every new couple. But for Will and Patrick, the awkward family moments only grow more hilarious—and painful—when they must hide the truth of their predicament from the people they care about most.
Throw in the sexual tension flaring between them, uncomfortable run ins with Will’s all-too-recent ex-boyfriend, an overprotective mobster father, and a mafia spy tailing them around Healing, South Dakota, and you’ve got a recipe for madcap laughs and surprisingly heartwarming feels.
Episode 2 of 6 in the Wake Up Married serial.
With the Supreme Court’s decision this summer leading to national marriage equality in the United States, my co-writer Alice Griffiths and I decided the time had come to dust off the old Woke Up Married in Vegas romantic comedy we’d let languish, and we spent most of the summer working out the kinks so we could get it out to the world of readers.
Marriage equality isn’t a laughing matter, but it opens the door for a lot of hilarious fictional hijinks, that’s for sure. Obviously, waking up married in Vegas is an old trope. Rachel & Ross did it on Friends back in the day. There’s even been a gay exploration of the trope with a YouTube series called Husbands starring the gorgeous Cheeks. (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJT2u821_iRsU25k5fnWL4C8M5xne-spH) But Alice and I are believers in two things: 1) tropes like this exist for a reason (we love them!!) and 2) you can never have too much of a good thing!
As we worked on the story, it became clear that it worked best as episodic fiction and this new serial was born! It’s fun, snarky, ridiculous, laugh-out-loud in places, and yet love is guaranteed to bloom. Eventually. And hot sex. Eventually. Because all good things come to those who roll around in the UST (unresolved sexual tension) until they ache for it.
Or that’s the plan anyway. * wicked smile *
With all of that said, please enjoy this exclusive excerpt from Will & Patrick Wake Up Married (Wake Up Married, Episode One).
Will and Patrick have just woken up from a drunken night of debauchery to find themselves married. They don’t know each other. They can’t even remember the other person’s name at first. It’s been a rough morning for them both so far, and now:
“As for last night, I drank too much, and wasn’t thinking clearly.” Patrick holds up his hand, waggling his ring finger. “Obviously.”
As Will stews in his worries, Patrick focuses on how to resolve their predicament. Hopefully they can do it quickly. If they can get married in Vegas in less than fifteen minutes, it can’t take much longer to get a divorce, right?
“Look,” Patrick says. “Don’t beat yourself up. You’re a good person, even I know that much after one night. We’ll get a divorce, you’ll go back to wherever the hell you’re from. I’ll go back to Atlanta, and we never have to see each other again.”
Will eyes go wide at the word ‘divorce’. “What? No. Oh, no. No, no.” He’s hyperventilating again. “I’ve ruined everything. Oh, my God, it’s over. It’s all over.”
Patrick isn’t pleased to be married, either, and he’s going to freak out about it as soon as Will gives him a turn, but he really doesn’t think that what’s happened so far between them is the worst thing imaginable. Sure, he’s never drinking again, because this is so far outside of his comfort zone that he’s shocked that he’s not on fire. But no one’s dead. And, while looking on the bright side of things is far from his forte, the sex was amazing, and he’s not been that big of a jerk to Will yet, and, in Patrick’s opinion, that Ryan guy is good riddance. So, really, Will’s level of distress could be taken down a notch as far as he’s concerned. At least until it’s his turn to start the apoplectic hijinks.
“Come on, chin up,” Patrick says, hating that he’s giving a pep talk here. “Pull it together.”
“You don’t understand,” Will says, his eyes wide. “We can’t get divorced.”
“The hell we can’t,” Patrick says, his voice rising. “What are you? Catholic? They’re not that fond of the whole gay marriage thing in the first place. I’m sure they’d fully support a gay divorce.”
Will rises and starts pacing. He’s bowlegged from being fucked and there’s a hitch in each step. Patrick surges with pride that he’s the cause of that. There’s something incredibly satisfying about any job well done, of course. Except that he’s gone and married this particular job-well-done, and that zaps the pleasure from it just like that.
“No, it’s…” Will shakes his head. “It’s Good Works. I’ll lose Good Works!”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“The Healing Foundation for Good Works.” Will runs his hand through his hair and explains, “I run a charitable foundation. I started it with money I inherited from my father’s family.”
“O-kay,” Patrick says. “So?”
“My father is Tony Molinaro.”
Patrick’s eyes widen. “The Tony Molinaro? Mafioso boss?”
“Wait a minute. You said your name was Patterson.”
“It is,” Will says. “It’s my mom’s maiden name. I don’t really have anything to do with the Molinaro family.”
If the Molinaro family is involved, who knows what elaborate and illegal scheme might be in the works here? While he has no idea what they might want with him, or why they’d want him to marry and screw the brains out of Will, Patrick’s back to wondering if he was roofied by this baby criminal. Maybe he’s about to be dragged away at gunpoint into some nefarious and twisted plot of international crime and neurosurgery.
