For years Sir Samuel Shaw has secretly lusted after the handsome and popular Lord John Darnish, a man known for his good humor, expert riding prowess, and very female mistress. Certain that John is an unattainable fantasy, Sam is shaken when an accidental discovery reveals John might not be as unattainable as he once thought. But what is possible is not always likely, and Sam finds himself trapped between keeping a friend and risking everything for the unlikely hope of something more.
John is terror struck when his drunken mistake threatens to shatter the double life he has worked so hard to maintain. His terror soon turns to hope when he finds himself drawn to Sam, who he is sure does not share his interest in men. But subtle things cause him to second guess, and fear that his hopes are making him see what he wants to see.
Sam’s risks and John’s hopes turn futile, however, when blights from Sam’s past resurface to threaten them and Sam’s family. Can Sam choose between the love he has always wanted and the security of his family, or will forces outside his control hurt all the people he holds most dear?
I love Historical MM Romance, especially those set during the English Regency period, so it should come as no surprise that I adored this book. One Glimpse is Lydia Gastrell’s second novel and is the sequel to One Indulgence her first novel which I also reviewed. It can be read as a standalone story although the dynamics of the individual characters are enhanced by knowing what took place in One Indulgence.
Sir Sam Shaw and Lord John Darnish, both upstanding members of the Ton, live double lives hiding their secrets behind walls of family and friends. Sam has a kind, soft heart but he is still haunted by his years at Harrow as a young man. To the Ton Sam is a ruthless businessman and who is noted as rude and argumentative, he is barely tolerated and considered a terrible bore. John is the opposite, charming and well liked, a lady’s man but accepted as unavailable on the marriage mart as he is known to be besotted with his mistress Lily and their daughter Sophie.
Sam has lusted after the unattainable John for years but their lives become intertwined when Sam accidently discovers that John may not be so unattainable after all.
In One Indulgence, the first book, the story centered on Henry Cortland, Earl of Brenleigh, and Lord Richard Avery. I liked both men very much, especially Henry, but in One Glimpse Ms. Gastrell manages to make me dislike Henry intensely, especially when we see what Henry subjected Sam to at Harrow and how he is responsible for the shell of the man he is now. It takes a long time before I forgave Henry and he redeemed himself, that’s never happened to me before and is a testament to the writing skill of Ms. Gastrell and how she tells her stories.
Sam is an utterly adorable man, his outward reticence masking a shy and quite cheeky demeanor. He’s battled down by years of torment from his peers and I loved how open he became once he was comfortable in John’s presence.
John initially comes over as confident and self-assured but it’s soon clear that his outward calm is just a mask hiding a man terrified of being ousted and cut from society. John lives in a social bubble where he’s not even out to other gay men and being exposed would have been worse for him than death.
The story is extremely well written, and it’s obvious from the setting and the way the characters interact that Ms. Gastrell has does her research. The story pulled me in from the first page and it flows easily and quickly considering it’s over 400 pages. It’s full of plots and counter plots, enough to make your head spin, but not too many that you lose track, and whilst the ending is satisfying it was not predictable at all.
I was also left very curious about what’s going on with Julian Garrott and Elliot Evers so I’m really hoping for a third book (and hoping it will pair them together). For all lovers of historical MM Romance this is a series not to be missed. Highly Recommended.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
