Fire rages through Davlova in the wake of a bloody revolution. The tyrannical upper class has been overthrown. In the midst of the chaos, Misha and Ayo escape on Miguel Donato’s boat and flee across the sea to the distant city of Deliphine.
All his life, Misha has dreamed of leaving Davlova behind, but now the only thing he wants to do is go home. He has no idea if the city still stands or how many of his friends have survived. But before he can return to Davlova and find his place in the wrecked landscape of the trenches, he’ll have to face a new threat in Deliphine – the Dollhouse.
Even in Deliphine, most people think the Dollhouse is a myth, but Misha knows the truth. The Dollhouse is real. It’s ruthless. It has an agenda.
And now, it wants Ayo back.
I thoroughly enjoyed Return! It was a wonderful end for Ayo and Mischa. It showed growth of the characters and love.
However, those readers looking for a continuation of the uber dark and violent themes of book one will be disappointed. While there are brutally violent acts recounted in graphic detail, none of it happens to our characters. That isn’t to say there aren’t dire situations Mischa and Ayo find themselves in; the world they live in is still in chaos and they must navigate it to come through to the other side.
I loved how Mischa grew as a person, wanting more than his upbringing. I loved his dedication to Ayo. I appreciated that he grieved for Donato but it felt akin to the way domestic abuse victims still defend and “love” their abusers.
Ms Sexton brought the scenes alive. I could feel the difference between Davlova and Deliphine. I felt submersed in the surroundings.
So, though different than the first book, Return was still a wonderful novel.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
