K. J. Charles turns up the heat in her new Society of Gentlemen novel, as two lovers face off in a sensual duel that challenges their deepest beliefs.

Silas Mason has no illusions about himself. He’s not lovable, or even likable. He’s an overbearing idealist, a Radical bookseller and pamphleteer who lives for revolution . . . and for Wednesday nights. Every week he meets anonymously with the same man, in whom Silas has discovered the ideal meld of intellectual companionship and absolute obedience to his sexual commands. But unbeknownst to Silas, his closest friend is also his greatest enemy, with the power to see him hanged—or spare his life.

A loyal, well-born gentleman official, Dominic Frey is torn apart by his affair with Silas. By the light of day, he cannot fathom the intoxicating lust that drives him to meet with the Radical week after week. In the bedroom, everything else falls away. Their needs match, and they are united by sympathy for each other’s deepest vulnerabilities. But when Silas’s politics earn him a death sentence, desire clashes with duty, and Dominic finds himself doing everything he can to save the man who stole his heart.

My View:

A Seditious Affair is book 2 of KJ Charles Regency series A Society of Gentlemen. It’s the erotic and tense romance between radical Silas, a working man who believes in justice and fair conditions for all, and true blooded Tory Dominic, born of wealth, title and privilege.

Dominic works for the Home Office, his job is to uphold the laws designed to keep each man in his place as defined by birth. He has no time for radicals and those with seditious views. Dominic has urges though, urges that his friend and former lover Richard cannot provide. Dominic needs to submit, he needs the feel of rough hands and even rougher words. Through an arrangement procured at an assignation house Dominic finds those needs meet by Silas. When Dominic becomes aware of who Silas really is choices need to be made by both men, can they bend and accommodate each other, or are they doomed to fulfil the role society expects of them?

I loved both men equally in A Seditious Affair. Silas is proud and defiant, his views more than just spoken words, and Dominic, struggling to equate his needs with who he is, and who society thinks he should be.

The story is steamy and hot from the opening scene and as the pages unfold Dominic and Silas stand on opposite sides of social unrest and the battle between the privileged and those who have nothing. This is one of the things I love so much about this series, the way the romances weave effortlessly between true events. I’ve always thought of the Regency period as one of graciousness, elegance and duty, but Ms. Charles shows me that for all this was not the case.

A Seditious Affair is full of perfect small moments as well as tumultuous events. I loved the way Silas called Dominic ‘his Tory’, that spoke of a belief and a tenderness and that Dominic was his regardless of the difference in their stations. And Dominic, always providing food at their meetings, and not offering Silas money as he knew the man was too proud to accept what he would see as charity. Richard and Cyprian of course have their roles to play as well as the ever delightful Ash and Francis and Harry and Julius. The first part of the story interlinks with A Fashionable Indulgence, book 1 of the series, and I found it fascinating to see those events through fresh eyes.

For lovers of historical MM romance I can’t recommend this series highly enough, and for me book 3, A Gentleman’s Position, the story of Richard and his valet Cyprian, can’t come soon enough.
