Reid, an American shark research scientist, is in Perth, Australia working to develop a mobile app that may revolutionize shark safety practices. But even the company of his boyfriend, Graham, isn’t enough to stave off homesickness as Christmas approaches, and a missing shark and Graham’s struggling business seem set to ruin the holiday for good.

Let’s Talk About: SHARKS!

I’m excited to be on PBA for ‘Three French Men’—the third day of my ‘7 HOT Days of Christmas Blog Tour’ for “WET, HOT, AUSTRALIAN CHRISTMAS“! I’d like to talk about part of the inspiration for the story: SHARKS!

One of the main characters in the story, Reid, has a lifelong love for these animals, something he and I have in common. While I have absolutely no desire to share their water with them, there’s nothing about sharks that I don’t find fascinating. From the comforts of land, I love learning about how they live and the different ways their bodies have adapted to suit their environment, adaptations that have served them for millions of years.

In the story, Reid’s first exposure to sharks was from a copy of his older brother’s Disney Adventures magazine. This was something I plucked from my childhood, only it was my own magazine. I hunted down the cover online to share with you guys, and was surprised to see it looked different than I remembered! I thought for sure there were actual sharks on it. Anyway, there was ONE THING that captured my attention about that magazine. Can you guess what it was? Nope, it wasn’t Jason Priestley and animated character Jessica Rabbit (and Minnie Mouse, AND Daisy Duck? Little-me didn’t know WHAT the heck was going on there! LOL) Yep, you got it, it was…SHARKS!

What inspired me to write about Australia’s shark nets and the Western Australian shark cull is my real-life concern about the damage they do to the marine environment. There’s substantial evidence that the nets and cull do not actually help protect swimmers. There’s also the stark reality that countless animals, not just sharks, but whales, dolphins, rays, and sea lions, are often caught and killed as collateral damage. When the cull took place as recently as 2014, thousands of Western Australians came together to protest. It was important to me to not make my story a “preachy” piece, but rather present facts with Reid’s responses to those facts as a research scientist.

As it turns out, it isn’t just me thinking about ways to upgrade the 70 year old Australian shark “solutions”. Some non-lethal and reliable technologies are being tested right now. Where I came into play as an author was thinking about how our connected, digital world could link into these new, and existing, technologies to help keep people safe and aware. That’s when I came up with the idea of Surf Safer, a mobile app that could give beachgoers and lifeguards a real-time picture of what sharks were doing in the water. In reality, I am very hopeful that in the near future we will see people sharing the oceans with sharks in a respectful way that is safe for all species.

Thank you so much again for joining me today to talk about some truly beautiful and amazing animals. I hope you all have a very happy holiday season!

  1. I love learning about sharks too! I was able to pet some nurse sharks in the Bahamas years ago. They were youngsters in an aquarium and it was such a cool experience. I love to swim in the ocean. Whether it’s Hawaii or Cali or the Caribbean, I’m all over it. Waves are the best 🙂

  2. I am not that keen on sharks but believe they have more right to be in the water than I do. I feel more of a connection with dolphins, even thought they can be quite fierce. I live in Brisbane, Queensland, which is surrounded by the awesome beaches of the Sunshine Coast and the popular tourist beaches of the Gold Coast.
