“Can you not stand so close?” Oliver Blackthorne asked the wolf shifter.
“Why? Afraid you might be unable to control yourself and jump me?” Donovan smirked.
“No. I’m more afraid of fleas jumping on me!” Oliver snapped. His life was getting more complicated by the day. All Oliver really wanted to do was eat burritos, smoke a few, and chase ghosts with his team at Restless Spirits. But no, everyone wanted a piece of him. His aunts were hell bent on making him compete in the upcoming Ascension and now he had some horny wolf shifter sniffing around him and all but humping his leg!
“Cool, we can get a flea dip together!” Donovan smiled at his fussy mate. An unrepentant horn dog and proud of it, finding his mate never truly crossed his mind. He was sure the shaggy haired witch would fall for his wolfish charm and right into his lap. It would seem, however, Oliver was wearing his sassy pants and Donovan was going to have to rip them off… with his fangs!
I am loving this series. The world just keeps getting better and better and I am enjoying learning about the supernatural beings and how the factions interact. I am enjoying learning about the rules, powers, shifting abilities, and matings of each culture. It is so fascinating.
I also love the Oswalds and their interactions. I love seeing Rush and William growing together as it gave me a great view of a positive lifelong mating. Even though it hurt my heart to tangible feel Duncan’s pain, I enjoyed reading about him because it gave me a glimpse into a mating gone wrong. It enhanced my understanding of matings as a whole. I loved Oliver and Donovan’s mating because it was different than the previous matings. It had another layer that was as HOT as it was emotional.
I loved the progress made in the overall series ARC. I was hoping that since this book focused on Oliver and Donovan that we would get a glimpse into Oliver’s profession or more into Oliver preparing for his test, but I suppose I will just have to wait for a future installment since it seems that while each book focuses on a new mated pair, it also includes multiple story lines that include all the family members. Which was annoying in the previous book because it took away from the mating, but was much more balanced in this one.
However there were a few things that bugged me. The main issue I had was that it took me going back to book two to realize that the timeline of Gula overlaps with the end of luxuria. I was confused for a good while because there were memories and people that disappeared in the previous book and reappeared in this one. I almost stopped reading because I was so upset that there was such a huge continuity issue. But I am glad I took the time to figure out what was happening because I really did enjoy this story, especially after I realized the error in my thinking. I just wish it had been more clear that there was overlap.
Finally, the other thing that bugged me were the proofreading/editing issues. There were missing words, wrong words, and a few cases of missing/too much punctuation. I was able to overlook some of it, but it happened frequently enough to be noticeable and annoying.
Overall though, this series is interesting and has definitely gained a follower in me. Gula was an action packed story with an ending that has me NEEDING the next installment NOW!!!! I want it now!!!
