A love of art…

A mutual interest in art draws two shy university students together. Ben admires Vinnie’s painting of the university building, so Vinnie invites him to an exhibition of his artwork. From a wealthy family, Ben purchases some of Vinnie’s art and arranges for the artist to personally hang the paintings in his apartment.

Starry, starry night…

Ben commissions Vinnie to paint his portrait, in order to spend more time with the artist. On the night of the sitting, Vinnie fingerpaints the starry night on Ben’s chest… and they kiss. They begin a relationship beneath the night sky, God’s own canvas.

But every relationship has its ups and downs and so it is with theirs. When Ben thinks Vinnie spends too much time with a fellow artist, his jealousy drives a wedge between them and forces Vinnie into the very thing Ben dreads.

Hold tight to your dreams…

Ben and Vinnie will have to walk through fire before they can find one another again. But if they believe, and if they keep their faith in the night sky and each other, just maybe they can make their dreams of love come true.

Story Review:

See Brandilyn’s review the print version of Paint the Sky here.

Paint the Sky in audiobook form is gorgeous. Lush, vivid details adorn this beautiful love story that pays an unapologetic homage to Vincent van Gogh and the belief that two people are meant to be together despite the obstacles.

Ben and Vinnie are just adorable together, and their meeting is the stuff of romantic movies. Despite hailing from completely different backgrounds, they forge a bond through their love of art and music and begin a slow, steady path towards a relationship. The characters are fleshed out and likable but bear the human inadequacies and faults that make them believable and imperfect. If I had one complaint it would be that I wanted more of them both, specifically the tragedies in their pasts that have such a huge impact on their present yet are fairly glossed over in the story. Their scenes together make up for this, however, as they are passionate, rich, and vibrant in their emotion and description. Despite the story being told in Ben’s first person narrative, Vinnie comes to life and jumps from the pages as the driven artist who brings color, energy, and devotion into Ben’s world. Interfering family members also play a vital role in the lives of the two main characters and provide interesting texture to the story as a whole.

This is a relationship-driven romance from beginning to end. It resonates with all that makes relationships work and sometimes fall apart as it chronicles the twists and turns of the journey the characters take together. The sexual awakening and sensual moments shared between these two are the true masterpieces in this story, in my opinion, and are some of the most exquisitely romantic scenes I have ever read.

On a final note, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how attractive this cover is and that it is a perfect example of the vividness of the writing within. Overall, I highly recommend Paint the Sky and look forward to reading more titles from Ms. Blunt.

Narration Review:

Joel Leslie is pure magic. I would listen to him read a phone book. His accents are lovely, and he flawlessly alters them to fit the characters and situations within the story. Emotional and passionate, he doesn’t just read Paint the Sky: he performs it. I have found myself searching for more of his work because…well…yum!
