Wild and Precious: Book Two

Bisexual musician Cody Bellstrom is a free spirit, easygoing and unattached. On a cross-country trip, Cody befriends young Sandy Nixon and gets him safely to Portland and his uncle, Phineas MacDonald. Beautiful Phineas turns Cody’s life upside down, and Cody learns he’s not as unattached as he aspires to be. With the hard-won knowledge of what lies underneath his need to be free, Cody wins a chance at real freedom and true love.

Ever since his longtime lover Allen died, Phineas MacDonald has lived a circumscribed life. He stopped performing as fierce drag queen Phanny Hill and works part-time in a bookstore. Phineas never expected to find love again. But when sexy and caring Cody Bellstrom turns up, Phineas feels his orderly life slipping out of his control. Cody brings him alive again, but now Phineas must find the courage to let go of his grief over Allen and give love a second chance.

My View:

If you have read book 1 in CJane Elliot’s Wild and Precious series (aptly names Wild and Precious which we didn’t review, but I recommend). Wild and Precious is your straight man figuring out a bit later in life that he isn’t exactly straight. In contrast, There You Are fits more into the finding love when you least expect it trope. While you don’t have to read book one to enjoy book two, you will miss a great story and more importantly getting to know our main character, Cody.

Cody is Bisexual. Where he falls on the scale is irrelevant. What matters is he loves who he loves regardless of equipment. He was once engaged to a woman he loved with all his heart. He introduced Brent to the wonders of sex with a person of the correct (for him) gender. He has never stuck around anywhere for long. Needless to say, he didn’t get the guy in book one, so now we get to see him get his happy ending.

His happy ending is not waiting on a silver platter. He has to take a good look at himself before he can find his happy. He has to figure out why he can’t make himself stick if he has any hope of doing just that.

Phineas (sorry but I was picturing a pointy faced cartoon hellion the entire story!) has a little bit more tragic of a past to overcome. He has to get past his grief and find a reason to move forward. They find in each other a reason to break down those barriers. Phineas does it a little more easily than does Cody, of course.

There you Are is a sweet and precious story of finding love and finding a reason to stay. It is about facing your fears and taking a risk. Most importantly, it is about not letting the past define your future. If you are a fan of CJane Elliot’s work or have never read her and are looking for a new author you can count on for happy endings with just enough work to make it interesting, I recommend this series.
