The morning after their tenth anniversary, Nathanial wakes up to find his lover, Josh, is gone, their finances in ruin, and he’s about to lose the house. Overwhelmed and at a loss, he takes his son Bailey and returns to his childhood home—the home he left ten years ago after his relationship with Josh was discovered.
With his present in shambles, the future uncertain, and nowhere else to go, Nathaniel has no choice but to face his past and hope that something can be built from the wreckage.
Until There was You by JJ Bamber is a story of Survival. It is a story of forgiveness. It is a story of family. Finally, it is a story of love.
I was not entirely sure what to expect heading into my reading of Until There was You. I have heard mixed reviews, but I was intrigued from the time I read the blurb. I will admit; the blurb brought up memories of another fabulous story I read recently. Luckily, this story was much different than that one.
Bamber starts off by ripping my heart out (and the heart of our main character Nate). I was ugly crying through the first couple of chapters. Slowly, however, the author puts the pieces of Nate’s heart back together, with the help from an unlikely source. In the process my heart, of course, mended as well.
Nate is not perfect. He makes mistakes. He doesn’t completely learn to stand on his own. He learns when to ask for help and when to let his pride win. He learns when to hold back and when to be completely honest. He learns to be brave even when he doesn’t want to. He learns to be his own man.
There are a couple of skeevy parts of the backstory that are never really addressed. There are also a few unanswered questions surrounding the disappearance of Josh. However, I found these distractions to be minor in the face of Nate’s journey forward.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
