K. J. Charles turns up the heat in her new Society of Gentlemen novel, as two lovers face off in a sensual duel that challenges their deepest beliefs.
Silas Mason has no illusions about himself. He’s not lovable, or even likable. He’s an overbearing idealist, a Radical bookseller and pamphleteer who lives for revolution . . . and for Wednesday nights. Every week he meets anonymously with the same man, in whom Silas has discovered the ideal meld of intellectual companionship and absolute obedience to his sexual commands. But unbeknownst to Silas, his closest friend is also his greatest enemy, with the power to see him hanged—or spare his life.
A loyal, well-born gentleman official, Dominic Frey is torn apart by his affair with Silas. By the light of day, he cannot fathom the intoxicating lust that drives him to meet with the Radical week after week. In the bedroom, everything else falls away. Their needs match, and they are united by sympathy for each other’s deepest vulnerabilities. But when Silas’s politics earn him a death sentence, desire clashes with duty, and Dominic finds himself doing everything he can to save the man who stole his heart.
Oh man I enjoyed this book. I know I have said this before, but I am not a regular fan of Historical novels in the m/m world, but Ms. Charles is really challenging me to rethink my preferences.
This story was all kinds of yummy goodness rolled up into what appears to be this neat little package. However, this package has sprung a leak because I need the next book to get more from the overreaching plot arc. When is the next book? Tomorrow? No, damn!
Silas and Dominic’s story was fantastically erotic and dirty with an undercurrent of being tender and loving. And in the moments in between it was action packed and full of politics and machinations. I absolutely loved watching Silas and Dominic grow, both as individuals and as a couple. For a long time, I did not see how this could ever end well, or even remotely status quo. Ms. Charles pulled me in so many directions with these men that I was constantly on the edge of my seat. And every time I relaxed and thought she was going to show me the way to happy, she jerked me in another direction and I was biting my nails yet again.
I loved the politics in this world. They were so fun and full of angst and intrigue and plotting and good people doing bad for the right reasons and bad people pretending to do good but really doing bad for bad reasons. I was totally invested and NEED the next book to get my fix! I NEED to know what happens now. I NEED to see those scheming government agents get what’s coming to them.
There are not enough words for me to let you know all the ways I loved this book and all the ways I am loving this series. It is so historically relevant to today that I found myself shaking my head regularly at all the ways these historical politics are alive and well right now. If you have not read this series, don’t. Pick them up in audio format and enjoy the ride instead. You won’t regret it.
As always Matthew Lloyd Davies was the perfect narrator for this book. He was Dominic. He was Silas. He was every man and woman presented in this story. When the emotions ran high, his narration emphasized that. When the emotions became somber and quiet, I had to raise the volume on my phone because his narration became somber and quiet as well. I loved it! This was a performance that truly enhanced my enjoyment of an already exceptional story.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
