Adam Lambert: The Muse Who Freed My Soul ~ Outside the Margins with CJane Elliott

In spring of 2008 I was minding my own business, living a good life with a lovely  husband and a stellar son, and a satisfying job being a hospice social worker. We’d moved to the Pacific Northwest three years before and loved it. All was fine.

I wasn’t a writer. I’d been an English major and an avid reader all my life, but writing a novel, let alone getting it published, was the farthest thing from my mind.

Then a gal at work told me to check out some guy who was currently competing on American Idol—Adam Lambert. Go find him on YouTube, she said, because he just did a Middle Eastern version of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire”. This I had to see! Here it is:

My jaw dropped to the floor as this gorgeous guy with eyeliner and fingernail polish let loose with one of the most amazing voices I’d ever heard. He freaked Simon Cowell out (and REALLY freaked the country singer Randy Travis out) and the audience went nuts. So did I. Who even WAS this person who was so bold and fearless and fucking talented (and beautiful)?

He is Adam Lambert and in the last seven years he’s become an international star. He’s recently completed a tour as the vocalist for Queen – Brian May called him “a gift from God” and “the first person we’ve encountered [since Freddie Mercury] who can do all the Queen catalogue without blinking”, he’s released three amazing albums, he’s been on Glee and other TV shows, and he’s currently on a worldwide tour in support of his third album, The Original High.

Oh, and he’s still beautiful. He posted this pic on his Instagram in November:

Here he is last week in Seoul singing “Just Dance” as a tribute to David Bowie:

The other thing that moves me about Adam is that he’s gay. I’ve put that fact way down in this column because Adam has never wanted to be known as “the gay superstar/musician” but he also has never hidden it. He’s championed the causes of the  LGBT community, he posed with his boyfriend on the red carpet, and he was the first out gay artist to have an album debut at #1 on the Billboard charts.

So what does this have to do with me and writing? Back in 2008, the experience of seeing Adam be so out there, fearless and free, shook loose something in me, something that had been hiding for a long time—passion. I got deeply into all things Adam, followed his trail on the Internet to Live Journal and other places, and discovered m/m stories. I hadn’t written fiction since I was thirteen but characters have always been there, talking in my head. It took falling in love with Adam Lambert to give them voice.

I remember sitting in bed with a yellow legal pad, writing my first scene while my internal critic looked on in disdain. And then I ventured to send my writing efforts to some of the great writers in my online community. How embarrassing! But they were helpful and encouraging and I kept going. I posted my first story and had the incredible experience of hearing from readers what they liked about it and what they took away from it.

I had found my passion and I never looked back. Seven years later, I’m a published author of three novels, five novellas, and more to come.

Thank you, Adam!

Bisexual musician Cody Bellstrom is a free spirit, easygoing and unattached. On a cross-country trip, Cody befriends young Sandy Nixon and gets him safely to Portland and his uncle, Phineas MacDonald. Beautiful Phineas turns Cody’s life upside down, and Cody learns he’s not as unattached as he aspires to be. With the hard-won knowledge of what lies underneath his need to be free, Cody wins a chance at real freedom and true love.

Ever since his longtime lover Allen died, Phineas MacDonald has lived a circumscribed life. He stopped performing as fierce drag queen Phanny Hill and works part-time in a bookstore. Phineas never expected to find love again. But when sexy and caring Cody Bellstrom turns up, Phineas feels his orderly life slipping out of his control. Cody brings him alive again, but now Phineas must find the courage to let go of his grief over Allen and give love a second chance.

Phineas pulled the dress on and let its skirt fall gently around him, then contemplated himself in the mirror. He loved this dress—it reminded him of the one Marilyn Monroe had worn in The Seven Year Itch, which had billowed so tantalizingly around her thighs. Only this one was jade green, the color contrasting wonderfully with his red hair. He stared at himself, admiring how the halter set off the dusting of freckles on his shoulders, liking how feminine he still looked in his makeup and eyelashes, even without the wig.

Cody appeared behind him, barefoot and shirtless—sexy and lanky and all man—and snaked his tattooed arms around Phineas’s waist. “What a beautiful fox you are.”

Phineas saw his own eyes shining in the mirror as the color rose in his face. He reached back to caress Cody’s cheek, leaning against his strong chest. “You make me feel beautiful.”

“May I take my beautiful babe to bed now?”

“Only if you plan to fuck me into the mattress.”

Cody tightened his arms around Phineas and nipped his shoulder with his teeth. “Oh, that was the plan, believe me.”

They walked to the big bed. “I had this fantasy,” Phineas murmured. “The night I met you.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.” Phineas sat on the side of the bed, Cody standing in front of him. He pulled Cody in by the waistband of his jeans and ran his hands up Cody’s sides. “I fantasized that I was lying in bed with my dress on and you were sucking me off.” He leaned forward and planted a kiss on the skin right above Cody’s hip.

“Mm, yes. Sounds like another good plan.” Cody stroked Phineas’s hair, making Phineas want to purr like a cat.

“Mm hm.” He nuzzled Cody’s belly button, enjoying the smell and taste of his skin, then got busy unsnapping his jeans and pulling down the zipper.

  1. Last year I wrote a book with Adam’s Better Than I Know Myself playing on continuous loop in my head, so of course I had to come check out your post. His voice is absolutely inspiring! I can only imagine Simon’s face at the end of his amazing Ring of Fire. Thanks for sharing the video, and all the best with your new release!
