Jake Rushman is on the run, but it’s too late. He’s being tracked by an expert.
Motorcycle Club Enforcer Nick is tough, but even he has a conscience. It’s slowly destroying him, together with memories of his parents’ ugly deaths. Nick eliminates the guilty, but Jake Rushman is the innocent witness to a murder. It will be one kill too many.
Determined to find redemption, Nick plans to trade his life for Jake’s. Neither man counts on the fierce, powerful bond that the collision of their opposing worlds brings, and Jake refuses to let Nick sacrifice himself. He offers Nick the one thing he’s never had: hope.
But with a violent past tracking them, Nick might be forced to do the one thing he promised himself he never would—kill again.
Two days on from finishing Happy Birthday by BD Roca, and I still don’t know what to think about this story. The overall premise was quite interesting. A Motorcycle Club’s enforcer and the witness he is set to eliminate find passion and eventually love. They save each other more than once. So that is all well and good as they ride into the sunset.
However, I got whiplash as few times while reading this story. I never connected Nick and Jake together. Their initial meeting was suspect, and everything that happened after that was just a little too something for me.
I can’t say that it was out of character for Jake since we really never learn enough about the man Jake was before the beginning of the story. I also never understood how Jake knew about the motorcycle club and to be concerned about it. Was he in the life?
Once I got past the “why the f*** are these two even giving each other the time of day” reaction, I was able to enjoy their story. I appreciated that they each brought something to the relationship. I also appreciated that neither blamed the other for their predicament.
There was a certain sweetness underneath the gruff exterior of the Motorcycle Club and the murder. There was also passion and some hot sex.
I am sure I will give this author another shot in a longer format.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
