Blurb:

John Tilney–praeternatural pyrokinetic and mystery author–has noticed the bottom dropping out of the market for his usual gothic fare, so he goes to Lowell Kanaan, PI, for a crash course in noir. Lowell, the cranky wolf-shifter detective, isn’t sure why he agrees to let John shadow him–though it might have something to do with John’s weirdly endearing honesty… and pretty lips. John thinks he’s found the perfect detective novel hero in Lowell, but it isn’t long before he realizes he doesn’t want Lowell for his book, but for himself.

As they become entangled in a supernatural whodunnit involving the Zombie Mafia, black market body parts, and shady insurance deals, their partnership grows closer–and hotter. But when it comes down to the wire, Lowell’s wolfy protective side threatens to drive John around the bend, or at least out of the office. Good thing John’s as much sunshine as he is fire; hopefully it’s enough to help them catch a murderer before they end up in literal pieces, too.

My View:

I honestly didn’t know what to expect going into Kanaan & Tilney: The Case of the Arms Dealers. As I finish this story, all I can say is I hope this isn’t the last we hear from Kanaan and Tilney.

They are a mismatched couple in so many ways, but together they make a pretty formidable PI team. Even if one is a bit reluctant to admit it.

I think that John Tilney’s powers are akin to those seen in Hawthorne’s Superpowered Love series though I haven’t read that series so I might be wrong. He is an elemental with the power of fire. He is also a writer and an all around inquisitive guy. He knows how to stand up for himself. I like him.

Lowell Kanaan is a PI, former cop, and wolf shifter. He is packless and has a mysterious reason for leaving the force. Of course, the police force isn’t quite like what we know and love today. For me, the jury is still out on him.

From a mystery perspective, the Zombie Mafia storyline was intriguing and well thought out. From a romance perspective, it felt someone insta-lovey. One minute they were just shy of enemies and the next they were declaring love (well practically).

As I said, I think the bones are there for an enjoyable series, and I would love to see what these two authors can make of it.
