Well, this is awkward.
I’m writing this blog post three weeks in advance. As I type, I am (was) sat on a sofa in London fighting off a dose of cholera, while the cat sits under the newly installed Christmas tree. As you read, well into the new year with all the tinsel and pine needles hoovered up, the plastic presents broken and 2016 underway, I am (will be) in Burma. (Which is what the cholera was about. Oral immunisation. Side effects: nasty.)
I have to get this written now because Christmas is going to be busy and we leave the country just after. But the thing about writing blog posts in advance is, obviously, that you don’t know what will have happened, and this presents a problem.
I’ve already done (will have already done) book recs as an end of year post. I could write one of those ‘looking forward to the new year’ posts but you’re reading this on the 6th and you will have already seen about thirty of those. A light, frothy blog post might well be incredibly inappropriate in the shade of whatever political drama or global catastrophe has happened that I don’t know about because it hasn’t happened yet. I could write something serious and intellectually stimulating, but I’ve done four books this year, and my idea of intellectual stimulation right now is watching the World’s Strongest Man competition because old James Bond movies are too demanding.
Look, I think I can safely assume that someone will have done something in Romancelandia. They always do.
So here goes: my all-purpose comment on The Thing That Happened. Please just delete as appropriate.
I am [appalled / interested / overjoyed] to read that [AUTHOR NAME] has [let down / baffled / delighted] the entire romance community with [his / her / their] latest [outrage / shenanigans / achievement].
I’m not sure how anyone could be so [shameless / ridiculous / fantastic]. Really, the level of [immorality / absurdity / talent] is enough to make your eyes water, and I think we’re all utterly astonished in a [terrible / bewildered / wonderful] way. [AUTHOR NAME] should be [ashamed / proud] and I for one will [never / always] buy [his / her / their] books again.
I think we’ve all learned a very valuable lesson from this [sorry / magnificent] business. Let’s just hope it [never / sometimes / frequently] happens again.
Okay, that’s me covered. Have a great [holiday / break / new year] and I’ll be catching up with current events on my return. Don’t forget to tell me what happened…
Title: A Seditious Affair
Author: KJ Charles
Publication Date: 12/15/2015
Silas Mason has no illusions about himself. He’s not lovable, or even likable. He’s an overbearing idealist, a Radical bookseller and pamphleteer who lives for revolution . . . and for Wednesday nights. Every week he meets anonymously with the same man, in whom Silas has discovered the ideal meld of intellectual companionship and absolute obedience to his sexual commands. But unbeknownst to Silas, his closest friend is also his greatest enemy, with the power to see him hanged—or spare his life.
A loyal, well-born gentleman official, Dominic Frey is torn apart by his affair with Silas. By the light of day, he cannot fathom the intoxicating lust that drives him to meet with the Radical week after week. In the bedroom, everything else falls away. Their needs match, and they are united by sympathy for each other’s deepest vulnerabilities. But when Silas’s politics earn him a death sentence, desire clashes with duty, and Dominic finds himself doing everything he can to save the man who stole his heart.
