Rick R. Reed on CAREGIVER, HUSBAND HUNTERS, ORIENTATION, HUNGRY FOR LOVE, RAINING MEN, THIRD EYE ~ Retro Reads Author Spotlight Interview Local Giveaway

Prism Book Alliance® would like to thank Rick R. Reed for taking the time to talk with us today about their retro title from Dreamspinner Press CAREGIVER, HUSBAND HUNTERS, ORIENTATION, HUNGRY FOR LOVE, RAINING MEN, THIRD EYE. PBA_Retro_Reads_Spotlight

We are here today to talk about a few of your backlist titles — CAREGIVER, HUSBAND HUNTERS, ORIENTATION, HUNGRY FOR LOVE, RAINING MEN, THIRD EYE. Why did you choose these 6 titles?

Because I think they demonstrate my range as well as offering different things for different readers. For example, HUSBAND HUNTERS and HUNGRY FOR LOVE offer great romance with a little comedy thrown in, ORIENTATION, RAINING MEN, and CAREGIVER are both award-winners and works of emotional depth (you need a hanky for each of them), and THIRD EYE is for those who love heart-pounding psychological suspense. Blurbs are below:

CAREGIVER
Winner of the 2013 EPIC eBook Award for Best Contemporary Romance
It’s 1991, and Dan Calzolaio has just moved to Florida with his lover, Mark, having fled Chicago and Mark’s addictions to begin a new life on the Gulf Coast. Volunteering for the Tampa AIDS Alliance is just one part of that new beginning, and that’s how Dan meets his new buddy, Adam.

Adam Schmidt is not at all what Dan expected. The guy is an original–witty, wry, and sarcastic with a fondness for a smart black dress, Barbra Streisand, and a good mai tai. Adam doesn’t let his imminent death get him down, even through a downward spiral that sees him thrown in jail.

Each step of Adam’s journey teaches Dan new lessons about strength and resilience, but it’s Adam’s lover, Sullivan, to whom Dan feels an almost irresistible pull. Dan knows the attraction isn’t right, even after he dumps his cheating, drug-abusing boyfriend. But then Adam passes away, and it leaves Sullivan and Dan both alone to see if they can turn their love for Adam into something whole and real for each other.

HUSBAND HUNTERS
You never know where the love of your life might turn up.

When Matt Connelly suggests to his best buddy Cody Mook that they head to downtown Seattle to audition for the gay reality TV show Husband Hunters, both agree the experience might be a lark and a chance to grab their fifteen minutes of fame. What they don’t know is that the show, modeled after HGTV’s House Hunters, will open doors of longing neither expected. For Matt, the secret love he has long harbored for Cody might be thrust into the spotlight. Cody might realize his search for his perfect-forever-man extends no farther than the man who’s always been at his side.

Husband Hunters promises laughter, tears, and, just maybe, a happy ever after. Will Cody and Matt’s story be one of best-friends-to-lovers—or an outright disaster?

ORIENTATION
Christmas, 1983: A young man, Robert, tends to his soul mate, Keith, who is dying from AIDS. Robert tries valiantly to make this a special Christmas for his lover, but loses the fight late Christmas night.

Christmas, 2007: Robert ventures out late Christmas night and finds a young girl about to fling herself into the unforgiving waters of Lake Michigan. He rescues her, and the two form a bond forged from an odd feeling they share of familiarity, and even love. Neither understands it, since Jess is a lesbian and Robert has never been attracted to women. But there’s more…Jess begins having strange dreams, reliving key moments she couldn’t know about in Keith and Robert’s life and courtship. Robert and Jess begin to wonder if their inexplicable feelings might be rooted in something much more mystical than a savior/victim relationship.

As the two move toward and pull away from each other, Ethan, Robert’s younger lover, plots the unthinkable. His crystal meth-addled mind becomes convinced there’s only one way to save himself, and that is through Robert’s destruction. Christmas 2007 spirals downward to a shattering climax in which both love and lives hang in the balance.

There’s a murder attempt…salvation…redemption…

And a new love is born.

HUNGRY FOR LOVE
Nate Tippie and Brandon Wilde are gay, single, and both hoping to meet that special man, even though fate has not yet delivered him to their doorstep. Nate’s sister, Hannah, and her kooky best friend, Marilyn, are about to help fate with that task by creating a profile on the gay dating site, OpenHeartOpenMind. The two women are only exploring, but when they need a face and body for the persona they create, they use Nate as the model.

When Brandon comes across the false profile, he falls for the guy he sees online. Keeping up the charade, Hannah begins corresponding with him, posing as Nate. Real complications begin when Brandon wants to meet Nate, but Nate doesn’t even know he’s being used in the online dating ruse. Hannah and Marilyn concoct another story and send Nate out to let the guy down gently. But when Nate and Brandon meet, the two men feel an instant and powerful pull toward each other. Cupid seems to have shot his bow, but how do Nate and Brandon climb out from under a mountain of deceit without letting go of their chance at love?

RAINING MEN
The character you loved to hate in Chaser becomes the character you will simply love in Raining Men.

It’s been raining men for most of Bobby Nelson’s adult life. Normally, he wouldn’t have it any other way, but lately something’s missing. Now, he wants the deluge to slow to a single special drop. But is it even possible for Bobby to find “the one” after endless years of hooking up?

When Bobby’s father passes away, Bobby finally examines his rocky relationship with the man and how it might have contributed to his inability to find the love he yearns for. Guided by a sexy therapist, a Sex Addicts Anonymous group, a well-endowed Chihuahua named Johnny Wadd, and Bobby’s own cache of memories, Bobby takes a spiritual, sexual, and emotional journey to discover that life’s most satisfactory love connections lie in quality, not quantity. And when he’s ready to love not only himself but someone else, sex and love fit, at last, into one perfect package.

THIRD EYE
Who knew that a summer thunderstorm and his lost little boy would conspire to change single dad Cayce D’Amico’s life in an instant? With Luke missing, Cayce ventures into the woods near their house to find his son, only to have lightning strike a tree near him, sending a branch down on his head. When he awakens the next day in the hospital, he discovers he has been blessed or cursed—he isn’t sure which—with psychic ability. Along with unfathomable glimpses into the lives of those around him, he’s getting visions of a missing teenage girl.

When a second girl disappears soon after the first, Cayce realizes his visions are leading him to their grisly fates. Cayce wants to help, but no one believes him. The police are suspicious. The press wants to exploit him. And the girls’ parents have mixed feelings about the young man with the “third eye.”

Cayce turns to local reporter Dave Newton and, while searching for clues to the string of disappearances and possible murders, a spark ignites between the two. Little do they know that nearby, another couple—dark and murderous—are plotting more crimes and wondering how to silence the man who knows too much about them.

Tell us more about our Main Characters.
See blurbs above, which discuss the main characters for each.

What about each of these titles makes you the proudest?
I’m proud of each for different reasons, but the common thread between them all that I’m most proud of is the truth of the characters (and their emotional depth—none of them is black and white; they’re human and make mistakes, just like all of us). I’m also proud that each of these books, in its own way, has the ability to forge an emotional connection with the reader.

If you could change one thing in each of these stories what would it be and why?
I wouldn’t change anything. Nothing that I do is perfect, that’s for sure. But I’m a no regrets kind of person. They’re each books that needed to be written at a specific time. Why would I want to change that?

Will we be hearing more from any of these characters in the future?
Possibly. As I mentioned, I get close to my characters, so there’s no telling when one might call to me again to tell readers more about him or her.

Tell us about some of your other titles.
Here are some of the most recent, and one, MUTE WITNESS, coming out on February 9.

THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR
With the couple next door, nothing is as it seems.

Jeremy Booth leads a simple life, scraping by in the gay neighborhood of Seattle, never letting his lack of material things get him down. But the one thing he really wants—someone to love—seems elusive. Until the couple next door moves in and Jeremy sees the man of his dreams, Shane McCallister, pushed down the stairs by a brute named Cole.

Jeremy would never go after another man’s boyfriend, so he reaches out to Shane in friendship while suppressing his feelings of attraction. But the feeling of something being off only begins with Cole being a hard-fisted bully—it ends with him seeming to be different people at different times. Some days, Cole is the mild-mannered John and then, one night in a bar, he’s the sassy and vivacious drag queen Vera.

So how can Jeremy rescue the man of his dreams from a situation that seems to get crazier and more dangerous by the day? By getting close to the couple next door, Jeremy not only puts a potential love in jeopardy, but eventually his very life.

TRICKS
Tricks can mean many things: sex partners, deceptions, even magic—or maybe all three.

Arliss is a gorgeous young dancer at Tricks, the hottest club in Chicago’s Boystown. Sean is the classic nerd, out of place in Tricks, but nursing his wounds from a recent breakup. When the two spy each other, magic blooms.

But this opposites-attract tale does not run smooth. What happens when Arliss is approached by one of the biggest porn producers in the business? Can he make his dreams of stardom come true without throwing away the only real love he’s ever known? This question might not even matter if the mysterious producers realize their dark intentions.

MUTE WITNESS
The abuse of a little boy turns a community against a loving gay couple, and nobody comes out of it unscathed.

Sean and Austin have the perfect life: new love, a riverfront home, security. Their love for one another is only multiplied when Sean’s eight-year-old son, Jason, visits on the weekends.

And then their perfect world shatters.

Jason goes missing.

When the boy turns up days later, he’s been so horribly abused he’s lost the power to speak. Immediately small town minds turn to the boy’s gay father and his lover as the likely culprits. What was a warm, welcoming community becomes a lynching party out for blood.

As Sean and Austin struggle to stay together amidst innuendo, the very real threat of Sean losing the son he loves emerges. Yet the true villain is much closer to home, intent on ensuring the boy’s muteness is permanent.

What one piece of advice was given to you when you are starting out as a writer that still sticks with you today?
It’s always the same advice and it’s simple. Read a lot. Write a lot. No book will ever teach you as much as doing those two things consistently.

What are you reading? What is next on your list? The First Cut, a debut thriller by Dianne Emley; after that, I have about 200 titles on my Kindle to-be-read next. Who knows what I’ll pick? It depends on my mood at the time.

Rapid Fire Time

  • Sweet or Savory? Both
  • Shave or wax? Wax what? I shave my face when I don’t have a beard.
  • Jocks or Nerds? Both
  • Red Heads or Blondes? Both
  • Hamburger or Hotdog? Neither
  • TV or movies? Both
  • Cat in the Hat or Horton Hears a Who? Neither
  • Pasta or potatoes? Neither
  • Favorite Color? Orange
  • Cook or bake? Cook

What are you working on? What is next?

I always seem to have a lot going!

Coming February 9—the new re-release by DSP Publications of my thriller/love story, MUTE WITNESS.
BLURB

I’m working on DINNER AT JACK’S a love story about PTSD, cooking, memory, and healing.

Coming in April, BIG LOVE, which I think is one of my best books so far. Here’s the blurb:
Teacher Dane Bernard is a gentle giant, loved by all at Summitville High School. He has a beautiful wife, two kids, and an easy rapport with staff and students alike. But Dane has a secret, one he expects to keep hidden for the rest of his life—he’s gay.

But when he loses his wife, Dane finally faces his attraction to men. Into his life walk two men who will change everything. He can’t deny his feelings for teacher Seth Wolcott, who is beginning his life anew. And bullied but out and proud freshman Truman Reid shows Dane what it means to love yourself, in spite of all the obstacles the world throws at you.

Coming out, coming to terms, acceptance, heartbreak and falling in love…. The first day of school is the start of a truly life-altering year for the three men, who are about to start a new journey together.

I also recently finished my first full-length novel collaboration with the very gifted and very easy-to-work with Vivien Dean. Our book, Stranded with Desire, will be in Dreamspinner’s new line called Dreamspun Desires. Our story combines a closeted CEO, his faithful assistant who’s secretly in love with him (and thinks it’s hopeless because he assumes his boss is straight), and a plane crash in the Cascade Mountains that teach both men about what’s really important in life—and love.

Look for it in August of 2016.
