Calvin Summers and Ethan Hobbs have been best friends since childhood, but somewhere along the line, their friendship evolved into something more. With the Therian Youth Center bombing, Calvin realizes just how short life can be and no longer keeps his feelings for his best friend a secret. Unfortunately, change is difficult for Ethan; most days he does well to deal with his Selective Mutism and Social Anxiety. Calvin’s confession adds a new struggle for Ethan, one he fears might cost him the friendship that’s been his whole world for as long as he can remember.
As partners and Defense Agents at the THIRDS, being on Destructive Delta is tough at the best of times, but between call-outs and life-threatening situations, Calvin and Ethan not only face traversing the challenges of their job, but also working toward a future as more than friends.
Friends to Lovers – Calvin and Ethan
Hello all! Thank you so much for joining me here today at Prism for the first stop of the Catch a Tiger by the tail Blog Tour, celebrating the release of book 6 in the THIRDS series, which is out February 5th!
Catch a Tiger by the Tail is Calvin Summers and Ethan Hobbs’s book. Although we get to see and hear from these two Destructive Delta Defense agents in the previous THIRDS books, we don’t get to delve deep into their thoughts or characters. We see them how Dex, Sloane, Ash, and Cael see them, and we learn a little about their friendship, but in Catch a Tiger by the Tail we get to know where their deep bond of friendship comes from.
Calvin and Ethan have been best friends since they were kids. Calvin was about twelve going on thirteen years old when he met the shy tiger Therian at his new school on his first day. He was intrigued by the boy who despite his size, was timid, all alone, and getting pushed around by the other kids. From an early age, Calvin detested bullying, and it’s no surprise considering his home life, which we also get to learn about in Catch a Tiger by the Tail. When he sees what’s happening with Ethan, he immediately steps in, and the two become friends. (You can read about the first time they met here. Available until Feb 29th)
Calvin and Ethan discover their families live in the same building, in the same rough neighborhood. They become insuperable. Calvin and Ethan’s friendship was built on compassion, and forged in the fires of hellish living conditions. Calvin’s home life was a violent one before his father walked out, and Ethan suffered from Selective Mutism and Social Anxiety, neither of which were diagnosed early on, his family believing he was just shy. Aside his condition, there was the Therian illness his father suffered from which was traumatizing for Ethan, and doctor’s believe was the cause of his mutism.
Yet despite their hardships, the two found faith, hope, and love in each other. They took care of one another, fighting side by side to survive the dangerous neighborhood they were growing up in. At school, the battle continued. Calvin’s been a brawler from the start, a trait he both hates and is grateful for. Since high school, Calvin has been fighting to keep him and Ethan safe, and in some instances alive. Once they were in college, they became future THIRDS recruits, and along with Ethan’s older brothers were able to move their families to Manhattan, where they also shared an apartment.
Calvin and Ethan’s bond becomes unbreakable over the years. For Ethan, there’s no one like Calvin. In fact, Calvin is one of the very few people Ethan speaks to. Because of this, when things change between them in Blood and Thunder, and Calvin kisses Ethan for the first time in the hospital, Ethan is terrified. Calvin is his whole world. His fears, a constant source of anxiety for him, kick in. For Ethan, there’s nothing more frightening than losing Calvin. Moving from friends to lovers might just be more than Ethan is ready for.
Friends to lovers is one of my favorite themes, along with enemies to lovers, but the transition for friends to lovers always seemed to me as more challenging, because as in real life, there’s so much more to lose. For Ethan, he’s afraid of losing Calvin and their friendship if things don’t work out, but for Calvin it’s different. For Calvin, he’s always loved Ethan, now his love has grown into so much more, and he can’t imagine spending the rest of his life with someone who isn’t his best friend.
