In 1780, Scotland, following a harsh year of drought, Callum Mackenzie is forced from his father’s farm in the hopes of finding work.
But as fate would have it, Callum is lured onto the moors by the will-o-the-wisp. Lost in the dark, he falls into enchantment, encountering faeries and nymphs, until he stumbles into the arms of a licentious Barrow-Wight who lays claim to his soul.
Hearing his silent pleas, Donal sends Liam the gruagach (faery) to rescue Callum and bring him to his farm, a place of refuge from the Fae.
Callum is happy working on Donal’s farm, slowly falling in love with the beautiful, silver-haired gruagach.
Yet there’s something wrong in the nearby forest….
Despite Donal’s warnings, Callum is lured into the forest and becomes tangled in its magic, easy prey for the Barrow-Wight.
Will Liam be able to strike a deal with the Barrow-Wight to save Callum’s life, or has Callum found his last resting place instead?

Thank you Prism Book Alliance for having me as your guest today. CALLUM’S FATE is the story of a young Scotsman sent from his home to find work, but who loses himself on the moors instead. Foolishly following the will-o’-the-wisp, he flees from the terrible Fae to fall straight into the arms of an amorous Barrow-Wight. But who is this impossibly beautiful creature?

Barrow-Wight: Barrow refers to the burial mounds they inhabited and wight is a Middle English word for “living being” or “creature”, especially “human being”. It does not necessarily mean “spirit” or “ghost”; it is cognate to modern German “Wicht”, meaning small mythical creatures. –Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrow-wight)

A simple definition, but it gives you a hint of what Callum is up against. But Callum’s wight has a little different history. It’s not his treasure he guards. Once upon a time, he was the banner barer for a powerful clan chief, who he secretly loved. Glenn followed the man to war in blind devotion, knowing his love would never be returned.

He watched his lord fall, struck through the heart by an enemy’s broadsword while his army was overcome. Glenn knelt by his cairn, tears on his face. A few days later his own life was taken in battle. His soul crept back to his lord’s side, swearing to never leave him again.

Hundreds of years pass before Callum stumbles into his barrow. Long years Glenn has spent alone, in sorrow, his lord’s spirit departed long ago. Twisted with grief and utter loneliness, the wight jealously guards his lord’s tomb. He claims the souls of all who would disturb his lord’s resting place, and yet, in his solitude, he yearns for their human touch as well.

Perhaps, with Callum and Liam, he’ll find some comfort and peace at last.
