Amateur photographer Josh Thornton is out but not so proud. He’s estranged from his family, his boyfriend dumped him, and his job at an estate agency is in jeopardy—especially after he crashes his boss’s car in the middle of nowhere on his way to Hartley Manor.

Callum Black works at the English country estate and lives there in an isolated cottage. Left mute by a childhood accident, he’s more comfortable in the company of animals than people. But when Josh—literally—crashes into his life with his camera and his friendship, Callum realizes his peaceful solitude has been more than a little lonely.

Josh’s affection for Callum deepens even as he’s consumed by doubts over Callum’s sexuality and whether Callum could ever love him. And Callum is haunted by the secret that stole his voice—a secret that keeps him tethered to Hartley Manor. When the past comes hurtling painfully back into the present, Josh and Callum have to overcome their fears and breathe life back into their dormant hearts in order to have a chance at their own picture-perfect future.

My View:

Dormant Heart was a sweet and captivating love story with incredibly written characters and simply beautiful words. I loved this story so very, very much. A true departure from many books in the genre.

I fell in love with both main characters at first sight. Josh Thornton is down on his luck, estranged from his family and recently dumped. He thinks things are going to get worse but an accident brings him in the orbit of Callum Black.

Callum, mute after a childhood accident, has been fine with his solitude—until he meets Josh. He’s drawn to Josh in a way he’s never been drawn to anyone before. He suddenly no longer wants to be alone any longer.

Callum and Josh’s voyage from friends to lovers was expertly and perfectly paced. Never rushed.

Swift certainly has a way with words. The scene where Josh lays eyes on Callum for the first time was absolutely beautiful.

The sun kissed his golden hair. Insects hovered and buzzed. The columns of morning sun lit the flecks of woodland debris floating all around him, like fairy dust.

And Josh and Callum’s first intimate encounter was so vividly described I was able to picture it perfectly.

The head of Josh’s cock tasted of salt and bitter. Between his legs, aroused and responsive to those most primal of stimuli, he smelled musky and exuded heat. It didn’t matter I’d never done this with a man. Somehow enjoying and lavishing Josh’s body came naturally. I only had to watch—listen and feel—to know I was unraveling him.

So damn sexy and incredibly hot. Not porn-ish or over done at all.

Together Josh and Callum help each other to move on from things in their past and look forward to a future together.

My one complaint is that the secret from Callum’s past—the one that led to the accident leaving him mute—didn’t seem like something that would keep him from speaking even as an adult.

Regardless, I enjoyed his book more than most I’ve read recently.
