I know what it is to be a Reader, and the rollercoaster world we live in! We live through our books. They affect us emotionally – deeply and often for a long, long time. Readers can like/hate a book … respond/not respond to it … argue / share / rave / cry / laugh about it …
Well, we’ve all done some of that, haven’t we?! The relationship with our books is tangled delightfully, rewardingly, entertainingly and sometimes disturbingly. We all love books, and many of us love talking about them. They’re a gateway for us to communicate, to share, to debate, to argue, to love, to disagree, to throw paperbacks at the wall in frustration and anguish …!
Off I go again. But the debates will continue as long as there’s fiction to share LOL. What’s a good/bad story? Who are the best heroes? Series/standalone? Long or short (fiction, that is g)? Contemporary/fantasy? One star/five star read?
And there it overlaps into my role as an Author, where I often see how my book has affected a reader. Yep, I wear the Two Hats of Literary Strife LOL. BUT I don’t want to blog today about any of the re-occurring debates on the behaviour of authors / reviewers / readers, believe me!
Today I want to concentrate on the positive, and say…
THANK YOU!! For the astonishing power of fiction.
THANK YOU to the writers who create these worlds and situations and characters that transport me, and entertain me, and anger me, and thrill me, and downright make me laugh and/or blub.
THANK YOU to the readers who offer up eagerness and hunger and appreciation of books, and demand more, and share opinions on what they already have, and praise and appraise and champion fiction across the globe.
I got a positive review this week for one of my books that (almost) made me cry. It was a moment where I felt I’d really reached a reader, and they’d found genuine pleasure in reading it. Not that I don’t have lots of lovely feedback, but this one caught me unawares (and wasn’t even from a member of my family).
So, next time I – or any of us – feel like moaning about 1* reviews, let’s instead celebrate the joy that comes from a positive reaction, and the brief but astonishing connection between author and reader.
And happy reading!

Maen is a Gold Warrior, an elite defender of Aza City, a favorite of fellow soldiers and his imperious Mistress. His loyalty and commitment are unwavering until he recruits Dax, a captivating and challenging Bronzeman who, despite his youth and inexperience, seduces Maen with his fierce hero worship. When they’re captured by enemies of the City, Maen risks everything to save Dax: his position, his faith, and even his life. But he loses his lover to the rebels and upon his return to the City is stripped of his rank.
In Aza, where a soldier’s only lawful devotion is to the City and his Mistress’s pleasure, the disgraced Maen is placed under the watchful guard of the arrogant Gold Warrior Zander and relegated to preparing a royal history for the new Queen. But his discoveries cast a new and shocking light on the past and threaten to stir revolution in both citizens and rebels. With the help of the lively and inquisitive scribe Kiel, Maen initiates a chain of events that will change their world forever – and offer him the chance to regain both his honor and his heart’s desire.
