Rod Nelson is used to being someone’s good time, and that’s fine with him. Spending his days at his adult toy store, Rods-N-Ends, he never knows who he’ll meet. The second Landon Harrison walks in, he has Rod’s full attention. It seems as if Landon wants him too, so why won’t the man jump in the sack with him already?

Landon never thought he’d return home to the town where memories lurk around every corner. He has to admit, Rod makes the adjustment a lot easier. He keeps Landon laughing. Despite the fierce attraction between them, he’s not willing to risk his newfound friendship to get laid.

Neither man wants something serious, but the more they’re together, the harder it is to keep their hands to themselves, until eventually they stop trying.

But flings between friends are never simple, and as they attempt to shift gears, diving into their first relationship, they’re slammed with setbacks. If they want to truly move forward, before they hit the open road together, they’re going to have to let go of a past that could make them crash and burn.

My View:

Remember in Crossroads when Nick and Bryce have their first visit to a sex shop. It was embarrassing, mortifying and very funny but they were put at ease by Rod, the font of all knowledge on sex toys, who used his wit, charm and innuendo to put them at their ease. Well Rod has moved on and now owns his own shop, Rods –N – Ends, he still has the same charm and wit and he’s got everything crossed that his new business venture works out.

Rod is a happy go lucky kind of guy at first glance, its only when you look further than the smile he presents to the world that you realise not everything is at it seems. He lost his mother when he was young, he lost his father at fourteen when honesty made him tell the man he thought would love him forever that he was gay. Oh, he wasn’t kicked out of the house but he spent the next few years being bullied with name calling and knowing he wasn’t the son his father wanted. Years later he can still hear his father’s voice telling him that no one will ever love him and its lead him on a destructive path where relationships are concerned and left him believing that all he’s good for is a quick fuck. He expects everyone to walk away from him and he projects this loudly and clearly to anyone who tries to get close.

Landon Harrison’s father walked out on his family when Landon was still a young boy and the ramifications to his life then and now are huge. He felt abandoned, he had to watch his mother sink into depression and he missed the man in his life so much it was a physical ache. The walls he has built up around his heart are impenetrable and he sees love and relationships as a danger, a thing to hurt and he has no intention of ever giving his heart to anyone. As soon as he was old enough he left home as fast as he could but with his sister getting married and his mum’s health still a worry he has returned and he feels like his life is out of control.

Rod and Landon meet over lube, yes literally over the lube, in Rods shop. They are clearly both attracted to each other but where Rod is intent on getting the handsome stranger into bed, Landon is equally determined that will never happen. They reach a compromise and find out they make pretty good friends. They fall easily into friendship, they have a casual banter between them which is often teasing, and they both have father issues but refuse to discuss them. But Rod is very persistent and also determined to get Landon naked, after a while Landon is amused by his antics and his determination doesn’t feel as rigid.

They are shifting gears….

I think I wrote in my review of Crossroads that the story felt real. The same words could be used for this book. Riley’s writing makes you feel like you are a spectator to the events happening on page, nothing feels forced or planned, the story always feels fluid even when things aren’t going well. Neither man is suddenly or easily fixed where their pasts are concerned. They sleep together with the plan of becoming friends with benefits but those damn pesky emotions get involved and both men discover they are not as immune to them as they thought.

They are shifting gears…
