His heart stolen by a powerful pari’s magic, a young prince’s veins slowly fill with ice. That is what the stories say. Three years have passed since, and all efforts to save Kisin have failed. He won’t survive another winter. To save the prince’s life, Razin, the court wizard and Kisin’s childhood friend, plans to seek out the pari. But unbeknownst to Razin, Kisin’s heart was never stolen; he gave it freely to escape the pain of impossible love—his love for Razin.
Razin won’t accept Kisin’s fate, for reasons obvious to anyone who knows anything of love. Kisin agrees to the desperate quest, out of duty and a need to protect Razin. But it isn’t long before Razin realizes saving his prince will require more than simply retrieving his heart. Razin will have to convince him to want it.
Do you like fairy tales? The Winter Prince is a fairy tale for grown-ups. A story where you can escape to a faraway land, embark upon a quest to save a handsome prince, battle a strange beast, and befriend unexpected traveling companions. If that does not sound fun and exciting then this story is not for you. If you enjoy tales set in a far away land, where royalty must follow traditions despite what their hearts are longing for, then this book will be some fabulous entertainment. It is a slow burn, much more about the story and the people, and of course, love.
Personally I love fairy tales. They offer an escape, and reality has no place in the world of magic. I recently read an article about the fact that many of our most beloved stories, fairy tales, have origins dating back over 4,000 years. I guess that is why books like The Winter Prince will continue to have appeal. There is something about telling a fantastical tale with beasts and princes and princesses which is embedded in our human psyche.
I enjoy most types of fantasy stories, but I love romances most of all. I think it is important to give yourself permission to forget about reality and just enjoy the story. That being said, I adore R. Cooper’s imagination! The characters are built up nicely, and as the plot unravels the reader gets to see the hearts and minds of all players involved. This book is not an explicit sex-fest, it is a book about duty and a journey of redemption, as well as the lessons that must be learned along the way. If you are a fan of magic, and love to leave reality behind, The Winter Prince will warm your heart.
