One bite can change everything… While the public struggles to live side by side with vampires, medical student Brian Preston has dedicated himself to their care and study by working in a government-run clinic that monitors and feeds the resident vampire population. He has learned to expect the unexpected in his job, but life takes a surprising turn late one night when a young, mysterious vampire named Kyle stumbles into his clinic and into his heart. As they draw closer, can Brian come to grips with loving the elusive vampire and can Kyle find the strength to share the secret that can separate them forever? Book One in the Mi Corazón Sangrante series, Bleeding Heart is the story of love, blood and the secrets that can spell the difference between life and death.
Medical student Brian Preston feeds and cares for vampires in a clinic, hoping to one day know more about the medical science surrounding those he assists. When young vampire Kyle comes in seeking aid, Brian is immediately captivated. Kyle has secrets, though, and as he and Brian begin a steamy relationship, his past may just catch up with him and threaten whatever future they might have together.
Intriguing world building is probably the strongest element in this paranormal m/m romance where humans and vampires have forged a tenuous co-existence. There is much yet to be learned about the vampire population and its physiology, and Brian is dedicated in his purpose of helping those he serves at the government clinic. The human prejudices and fear are chilling parallels to those of our own world, and the focus and perspective of this story cast a powerful light upon the ugliness of distrust and macabre fascination.
When Kyle and Brian first meet at Brian’s clinic, the attraction is immediate. What ensues is a series of hot and graphic scenes that are, basically, vampire erotica. Unfortunately, this is where the story loses its power for me. There is very little romantic build up to establish an emotional connection between the two characters, and the sex scenes are excruciatingly detailed. With a good deal of blood, biting, whining, and whimpering, these two young men go at it through a majority of the book. Ultimately, these scenes tend to bog down and replace valuable story exposition and more important character development.
Though rather predictable, the external conflict helps to create interest and gives the secondary characters more page time. These personalities are relatively strong and have a powerful impact on the plot and where this series may be headed. Other less threatening but rather important issues in Kyle’s background are handled off-page and would have been quite beneficial in connecting the reader to the character had they been addressed in an actual scene.
Another item to be noted is that the book actually ends at 80%, at which point discussion questions begin, along with a preview of the next book. This is not really a problem for me, but those readers who take issue with that sort of thing should be aware.
Perhaps as the series progresses, there will be further development of the characters’ emotional relationship, their backgrounds, and expansion upon the interesting social issues introduced in this book. This would certainly serve to strengthen Brian and Kyle’s story and drive it forward. Overall, Bleeding Heart is technically well written and sets up a fascinating paranormal world. It is a wonderful escape book for vampire erotica lovers, and I would recommend it as such.
