Who knew being bad could be so good?
Voss Potter ran from his life. He wasn’t wanted and was sick of being used as a pawn by his uncle. He thought he would explore the world as a stow away on an old friends ship. The only thing he wasn’t counting on? Maverick Sayers. The sexy first officer he’d lusted after for years.
Maverick Sayers loved his job. Nothing was better than traveling the world with good friends. One order changes his life forever. Protect Voss Potter. Now they are fleeing across the galaxy one step ahead of a money hungry family and a disease that could kill planets.
Can following orders leave to true love?
Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of violence and forced blood play.
This was the story I thought was going to happen in the second half of the last book. While I think it would have made a bigger impact in the previous story, I was really happy to see it play out in this book. I learned the answers to so many of the questions I was left with in the last book and I really enjoyed the Grey Death Plot. It was what drove this book and what kept my attention.
I liked that the big bad had a human side this time. He knew he was going crazy but fought to keep a bit of himself in the process. While he lost the battle in the end, those glimpses of remorse garnered my sympathy and a part of me hoped he could be saved.
I enjoyed the romance between Voss and Maverick but I did not connect with them as quickly as I would have liked. I felt like we were thrown into their lives after much of the story had already taken place. I would have liked to have learned more about these men and their lives before the start of this book. I had a hard time with the instalove feel of this one because I felt like there was so much that could have been shown to erase that insta feel completely. However, even feeling like I missed much of their history, I did like the way their romance ended. It left me feeling warm and fuzzy and hopeful that things would last forever.
I am enjoying this series. While each book has a rushed feel and could benefit from additional wordcount and development, as a whole, this series is rather fun and interesting. I love the connections between all the characters and the world is cool. I am excited to read James’s story next.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
