Title: Whatever It Takes
Author: Nicole Dennis
Publisher: MLR Press
Cover Artist: Deana Jamroz
Genre: Contemporary, Gay Romance
It takes an eye-opening talk for Riley Gordan to realize there’s something wrong in his twelve-year relationship with Conor Flemming. He creates extravagant events for same-sex proposals and weddings to over-the-top holiday parties, but he never considered one for Conor and him. Busier than ever, he realized his time with Conor had shrunk. He decides to use his event planning skills and put them to work to rekindle the spark.
Conor Flemming creates extraordinary cakes for anything from a cancer survivor’s celebration of life to a same-sex wedding, but never one for himself. When it comes to his life with Riley, he knows it’s failing, but not sure where it all went wrong. The silence hurts and worries him. Until a flurry of text messages changes the situation.
What would you do in order to keep the one you love in your life? Would you do whatever it took no matter the cost?
This is the question Riley Gordan faces when he got, well, basically a verbal Jethro-Gibbs-slap to the back of his head. He needed the smack to face up and realize what the hell was happening between him and his partner of 12-years, Conor Flemming. Something was wrong. There was silence between them. They didn’t kiss, make love or even sleep together.
Did they even have a relationship?
Riley knows he must face all these problems and more before he can concentrate on how to fix the problem. While thinking, he listens to the radio and a song by Lifehouse plays. The lyrics hit him hard. It’s the song ‘Whatever It Takes’. This becomes Riley’s motto throughout the rest of the story.
Riley is a wedding planner especially to the LGBT crowd and business is booming. His partner, Conor, owns a bakery and he designs and creates fabulous cakes ranging from eccentric wedding cakes to memorable cancer survivor cakes and whimsical shapes. Between them, their businesses go nearly nonstop and this helps the rift growing between them. Only, neither one recognizes the problem. They continue on their merry way.
Until the verbal Gibbs-slap changes everything.
Taking his wedding planning knowledge, Riley turns all his skills into courting his partner and falling in love all over again. They’re not young flirty men looking for a hot night. It’s been twelve years since they met on the dance floor in a nightclub and took a chance. They both faced their fortieth birthdays. They were well established in their chosen careers, even weaving their businesses together to provide more services to the LGBT crowd and more.
This isn’t a story of two men at the beginning of their lives. This isn’t a story of a first meeting. These men lived, entered into a full relationship and enjoyed careers. Now they face a roadblock. It’s up to them to decide if they’re going to fight for their love or walk away.
Whatever it takes. A decision needs to be made. This is the story of one couple standing at the virtual fork in the road.
About the Author
A quiet one, Nicole Dennis curled up with the latest book of a favorite author. Since the beginning, there were these characters in her head, worlds wanting to be built on paper, and stories wanting to be told. She began writing during class and continues to this day. Now she can let others into her imagination and worlds that always celebrate the love between two or more people within LGBT, paranormal, and fantasy.
During the day, she works in a quiet office in Central Florida, where she also makes her home, and enjoys the down time to slip into her imagination. She is owned by a semi-demonic tortie calico, affectionately known as Fat Cat.
