Title: The Rancher’s Son (Montana book 2)
Author: RJ Scott
Publisher: Love Lane Books
Cover Artist: Meredith Russell (Design), Dan Skinner (Photography)
Genre: Contemporary, Gay Romance
When he wakes up in the hospital, the victim of a brutal beating, John Doe, as he thinks of himself, has no memories of who he is or who hurt him. The cops can find nothing to identify him, and he can’t remember anything to help. Except the name Ethan and one recurring place from his dreams. Three words and they’re not much, but it’s a start. Crooked Tree Ranch.
Cop, Ethan Allens has never stopped searching for his brother and his brother’s best friend who vanished. When a report lands on Ethan’s desk that may give new leads, he jumps at the chance to follow them up. The man he finds isn’t his brother, but it’s someone who could maybe help him discover what happened ten years ago.
What neither man can know is that facing the very real demons of the past could very well destroy any future they may think they have together.
Story arcs in series books.
When I start writing a series, I love to have an overarching storyline that connects all the stories. In Texas I didn’t have that to start with, because, believe it or not, The Heart of Texas was a stand alone book. Then Jack and Riley poked at me, and suddenly I knew what the overarching theme of the entire Texas series should be. Family. It was as simple as that.
With Sanctuary, on the other hand, I had a five book series all imagined in my head. I could say it was mapped out, but I would be lying (LOL). Anyone who follows my postings will know that I make things up as I go along (Probably a good thing for an author to admit to, the making things up part anyway!). What I needed was a crime to link all the books, and so the Bullen theme was born. The witness to the murder was one book, the son of the murderer another, the traitor, the brother… All unfolded exactly (more or less) as I wanted them to do. Of course, book 6 happened, but that was okay because I had a storyline that tied into the Bullens and it was neat to wrap it up. And then, book seven happened. Finally, I got to deal once and for all with the big bad guy, and boy was it a good moment.
Now, with Montana, there is a thread of a story that will weave it’s way through the books. I plan on three books (plans can change). The first book was setting the scene, bringing characters into play, and the mystery of two missing boys was front and center, informing how one man, Marcus, the father of one of the missing boys, becomes a changed man.
In book two, The Rancher’s Son, there is another layer of the mystery, more solutions unfold, and questions raised, against the backdrop of a love story twelve years in the making.
I hope you enjoy reading Ethan and Adam as much as I enjoyed writing them.
Do you prefer series books that are linked by an overarching story? Or one-off books?
