Love can change a soul. But can it save one life?
Colm Weathercliff is a simple fisherman with an uncanny some might say preternatural knack for his trade. He thought leaving his small village to take his father s ashes to the capital city of Caithmor for a proper burial would be the grandest adventure of his life.
At first, all his hopes seem to be fulfilled. He finds a home where he s accepted without question, the freedom to use his talent to its fullest effect, and love with Nichol, a man with a longing for the sea as powerful as Colm s.
But Caithmor holds as many dangers as it does attractions. Colm s greatest secret turns out to be a dark revelation that gets him and his family shunned and changes everything he thought he knew about himself.
The truth about his parentage, his gift, even his physical form could poison his chance for love. And doom both him and Nichol to a gruesome, inescapable fate.
Having read the blurb for this, and being a big fan of Cari Z’s writing I was so excited to read this, and I was not disappointed.
Although the setting is in an AU it has a strong Celtic feel to it as well, in the settings, names the mythology that binds the whole story together. Colm, a fisherman, takes his father’s ashes back to the town where his father was born, he will stay with his stepmothers aunt. Colm has an amazing affinity with water, he seems to sense where is will move, and what it will do and he certainly doesn’t want to stay and take over the farm or get married. He settles into his new life and situation with ease, for the first time in his life.
Nichol, the grandson of his host, is determined to go to sea to be with his occasional lover, but Nichol and Colm are also attracted to each other and their friendship/ love affair combined with the revelation of Colm’s heritage changes their lives for ever.
The mer element of this is quite unlike what I have read before, and really added another level to this book, as did Nichol’s devotion to Colm. Initially I didn’t feel that the connection between Colm and Nichol was anything more than circumstance, but this changed and I felt how much Nichol loved Colm, and what he would do to save him.
The MC’s are young, and Colm in particular had been sheltered emotionally, so they do get themselves into situations that hurt each other, and there is quite a lot of heartache on the way, but once Nicol in particular grew up it took on quite an epic feel. Nicol’s journey to reunite with Colm had an almost mythical feel to it, and did result in a happy ending.
If you like myths, romance and aren’t adverse to some savagery then this is recommended
