Noah Trevelyan has lost his moorings. Disowned over his sexuality as a teenager, he hasn’t been back to his home on the Outer Banks since his fisherman father kicked him out. But when he returns for the Old Man’s funeral, he discovers his father left him the house and boat in his will. Noah must choose whether to stay or go, but he won’t be alone. There’s Ian, working to overcome the emotional scars left by a domineering ex-boyfriend, and Ty, a cheerful housekeeper who’s struggling to take care of his Alzheimer’s-stricken aunt. There’s Joshua too, running from the destruction of his old life, and Gabriel, who was once beaten and left for dead, and doesn’t know how to survive on his own.
Will they find in each other the strength and courage to keep living—and learn, together, how to love again? A polyamorous relationship is the last thing any of them expected to find in the Outer Banks, but it might be what they need most, and it might even be their redemption—if they can keep their group from breaking apart under the pressure.
One moment in time, followed by a sinking boat, brings five strangers together and it’s the start of something quite unique. If you look through my book shelves you will see I am no stranger to ménage or poly relationships when it comes to my reading material but my one rule is there must be more than an on page orgy for me to enjoy. I like the sex don’t get me wrong but I also need strong characters who grow and who each bring something to the story to keep it interesting. Noah, Ian, Joshua, Gabriel and Ty were all that I like in a story and much more.
The setting is beautiful, the storyline is strong and the characters are each struggling with their lives. Noah has come home for his father’s funeral but has mixed feelings about returning to the place he was run out of. Ty has family problems of his own but it’s a secret he’s guarding fiercely no matter how much he is struggling. Ian is a nurturer who has lost his confidence after his last relationship – it was with a domineering ass – ended badly. Gabriel, sweet Gabriel, is a lost soul at the end of his tether. Joshua’s world changed one night and the last twelve months he has been locked up in hell.
Any one of these men would have made for an interesting story but put together they made a phenomenal story. Five Sided Heart is strongly lead by friendship and healing. It exposes these men, they each see each other and all their flaws and they make a very simple decision to stick together. With two, three or four it never felt right to them but when they were all together, when they were five, it worked perfectly.
Max MacGowan is an author I look forward to reading again in the future and hopefully soon!
