Hot messes have a hard time with happily ever after.
Baz Acker and Elijah Prince have it all. They’re engaged, and their wedding is guaranteed to be a spectacle no event will ever top. So why are they hunkered down in a quiet corner of the Acker mansion, restless and edgy while they wait out the holidays?
When Baz suggests a road trip with Walter and Kelly to Las Vegas, it sounds like an ideal escape, but it turns out Vegas only amplifies their unease. Elijah can’t slough off the self-hating his parents programmed into him, and he worries how that will affect his marriage. Baz, crippled en route because of too much time spent in the car without rest, must face the truth that his wealth and influence can’t always counteract the limits his disability will put on his—and Elijah’s—life.
With help from their friends, a wily poker player, a take-no-prisoners drag queen, and a smooth-talking casino owner, they face the truth that happiness is a state of mind, not a destination where they book a stay. What happens in Vegas won’t stay in Vegas—it will follow them all the way down the aisle.
This short novel is a continuation of a story begun in the novel Lonely Hearts in the Love Lessons series and was written at the request of Heidi’s Patreon readers.
This book was a surprise for a number of reasons.
Firstly – I didn’t know about it so I wasn’t expecting it to land on my kindle.
Secondly – Although it has all my favourites from Love Lessons it is essentially about Baz and Elijah and Baz is still one of my all-time faves from the entire series.
Thirdly – This was the biggest surprise by the way but we got to see all the guys from Special Delivery and it was amazing! They were such good fun and an integral part of the story.
If you haven’t read this series then you really need to but to read Short Stay you absolutely must read book 3, Lonely Hearts, to have any clue about what is going on. This is the continuation of Baz and Elijah’s story and is just about perfect.
Baz’s mother is freaking Elijah out with her need to ‘go big’ with everything she has a hand in. Terrified by the thought of attending her upcoming New Year’s Ball he can’t even begin to imagine what her organisation skills will bring to his wedding – well actually he can and it’s making him sweat and hide under the covers.
Luckily Baz is well attuned to how his fiancé feels, even if Elijah believes he hides everything well, so a couple of days before New Year he whisks him off on a road trip to Vegas with their friends Walter and Kelly.
They meet new friends, they are reminded of each other’s limits. There are tears and there is laughter but most of all there is FINALLY communication and let me tell you all their expectations are met. This was such a fun little read and I can highly recommend it to fans of the series! Now I need to re-read the Special Delivery series…again
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with the eARC of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
