Gustavo Tiberius is not normal. He knows this. Everyone in his small town of Abby, Oregon, knows this. He reads encyclopedias every night before bed. He has a pet ferret called Harry S. Truman. He owns a video rental store that no one goes to. His closest friends are a lady named Lottie with drag queen hair and a trio of elderly Vespa riders known as the We Three Queens.
Gus is not normal. And he’s fine with that. All he wants is to be left alone.
Until Casey, an asexual stoner hipster and the newest employee at Lottie’s Lattes, enters his life. For some reason, Casey thinks Gus is the greatest thing ever. And maybe Gus is starting to think the same thing about Casey, even if Casey is obsessive about Instagramming his food.
But Gus isn’t normal and Casey deserves someone who can be.
Suddenly wanting to be that someone, Gus steps out of his comfort zone and plans to become the most normal person ever.
After all, what could possibly go wrong?
For the original buddy review I wrote with Paisley for the print version of this exceptionally funny, poignant, and entertaining book, please visit here. There isn’t much more I can add, except to say that listening to this audiobook during my 3 hours of commuting each day was pure enjoyment. Even though I knew the story already, it was just as bright, amusing, and tender as the first time I read it. Driving down the highway, I cackled like a maniac many times as I re-visited the unique town and personalities of Abby, Oregon. It was such a pleasure to be in the presence once again of Grumpy Gus, asexual hipster Casey, the We Three Queens, Harry S. Truman (#ferretwithmerit), and the entire, lovable cast of How to Be a Normal Person. Still laugh-out-loud funny, still tender and touching in its humanness, still a marvelous, unique, and noteworthy m/m romance, I will forever consider this one of my all-time favorites. Put quite simply, TJ Klune, you rock!
Derrick McClain does a wonderful job bringing TJ Klune’s characters and story to life. Gustavo and Casey are performed particularly well, and Mr. McClain is able to provide an easy-going, “wake and bake” element to Casey’s character while maintaining a likable and intelligent quality. He is also skilled at voicing the secondary characters, which is quite something considering their quirky natures. Although the story-telling feels a bit stilted and formal at times, this narration is very well done, overall. Thank you, Mr. McClain, for breathing so much life into one of my favorite reads.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with the audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
