When an affluent college-bound boy falls for a young artist, he must choose between the life that’s been mapped out for him and the chance at true love.

We are here today to talk about Set Me Free by Kitty Stephens.  What can you tell us about it? It’s a young adult novel about a wealthy young man whose parents have planned out his whole life according to their expectations. He meets a boy at the beach while on their annual family vacation and has to choose between obligation and love.

Please tell us more about our main characters. The two main characters are

Aaron Ledbetter and Jonas “Lucky” Luckett. Aaron is the only son of wealthy parents, who have his whole life planned out, including marriage to his best friend, Evelyn “Lyn” Rossman. Lucky is an artist, the only child of a single mother who works two jobs to put food on the table.

What about Set Me Free makes you the proudest? That I actually wrote it! My family has been urging me to write something and submit it for publication for years, but I always had an excuse not to. Now that I have, I wish I’d done it sooner.

What is next for these characters?  Is there more to this series?  If so who will we hear from next? Set Me Free is a standalone novel, so this is the only time we’ll see them.

If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring writers, what would it be? Keep writing!

What’s the most difficult thing about writing a good short story? Having to cut things out! There was a scene or two in the original version of Set Me Free that was cut because it was too long (at the time) and because it didn’t work without further context.

What’s your favorite thing to wear? Jeans and a t-shirt. I’m all about comfort.

Do you have a character in your head that you have yet to write a story for? Yes, I do! I’ve had this idea for a story in my head for a few years and the main characters are still begging to be written.

Do you take a break from a first draft to get distance from it, or dive right into editing, or edit heavily as you write? I definitely take a break to get distance. I feel like if you dive in while you’re still writing, you’ll miss things.

What book do you keep by your bed? It changes frequently, but right now it’s Outlander by Dana Grabaldon.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why? Teleportation! I have phobias that make flying hard for me and so many of my friends live far away. If I could teleport, I could visit them.

If you had to be a cat, dog, or a rat, which would you choose and why? A cat, I think. I tend to be an independent person, a lot like a cat.

If you had to throw a Stephen King book out the window, which would you choose? Whichever one has the freaking looking clown on the cover (It?). The cover alone is enough for me to want to get rid of it.

What are you reading right now and what is next on your to-be-read list? I just finished Outlander and I’m getting ready to start reading the second book in the series, Dragonfly in Amber.
